Dear Prudence,
I feel like everyone I know habitually uses their phone while they drive, or drives high. I consider these things to be equivalent to drunk driving, but they seem to be socially acceptable, and I find it disgusting. It’s selfish, shortsighted, disrespectful to every other living being on the road, pathetically lacking in self-control, and moronic. Typically, I would choose not to have someone in my life if I were disturbed by their sense of morality. In fact, I don’t keep drunk drivers in my life at all. It is just inexcusably wrong in my eyes, especially with things like ride share apps in existence.
However, it seems that the public consensus is that driving high is okay and that texting and driving is okay. These behaviors are so commonplace that I wouldn’t have anyone in my life left if I cut these people out. I can choose not to get in the car with anyone who is less than sober, and I can speak up when someone is using their phone while they are driving with me in the car. But I don’t know what to do with the frustration I feel. People often say “if I die, I die” in response to these concerns, but fail to consider the lives of others. All this might sound harsh, but I think car accidents are harsher.
