Wedding Woes

No Friyay, Fri-boo

For me anyway.  I cancelled my trip.  Tuesday is calling for really bad weather both here and where I was going.  I could've worked from out of town, but my friend watching Harley would've had to make it here to take care of her and I'm just not comfortable asking that, b/c he would do it, hell or 6 inches of snow/ice.  Plus Harley being alone for 5 days is just not doable for me.  February is always a tossup in MO, but it seems it's going to be a very wintery one.  Hopefully BFF can make it here next weekend.  However, his mom had fallen and broken her hip.  He said she's not doing well in rehab, so that's also up in the air.  HIs mom has a terrible medical history anyway and so this is a scary time.  Which actually makes me feel worse that I can't get up there, to see him and her.  It's kinda silly that living 2 hours apart from each other is actually harder at times, than half way across the country would be.

Going out tonight.  I have put together an outrageous outfit, but I'm still not sure I'm wearing it.  I am wearing my purple hair though and I'm excited about that, I love that wig.  Nothing else planned now.  What's everyone else up to?

Re: No Friyay, Fri-boo

  • I'm watching the weather for next week.  For us it's a mid-week Wed/Thurs and that  may be a big one.  Right now there are frozen ice puddles in my backyard because it rained and then froze over.  It's a whopping 31 so I'm staying away as my 44 year old self does not need to penguin walk and make bad choices.

Tomorrow's gonna be a long day with a fencing tournament at the HS and I hope they don't cut it short for weather so Chiquita can fence as a novice.

Last night I vented to DH very lightly.  It was a run around day with Chiquito going to the dentist and we're officially referred to the orthodontist for him.   I knew it was coming but what I didn't know is that he's congenitally missing two adult teeth which will make the braces even more likely so gaps can be filled in.   Chiquita had both musical rehearsal and fencing last night so I brought her gear to her (not sure if you see fencing gear but they're in very large backpacks that are heavy and take up a lot of space and fencing foils are considered weapons so someone with an ax to grind could report her for having the stuff on the bus).  Brought her the gear at 4:45 so she'd have it and waited.....and waited....and waited and it took her more than 15 minutes to get it while I also had to be at the middle school at 5 to pick up the brother.   Luckily his teacher was fine that I was about 5 minutes late but I was peeved.

Also, I love a smoothie and yesterday my blender started to smoke in the kitchen.  So now that DH evaluated it and its toast that was a cherry on the cake of the day.

Sorry about the trip cancelation @VarunaTT, sounds like the safe choice but definitely a bummer.  I hope you have fun tonight! And thumbs down at the waiting around to drop off the gear, and the blender on the fritz @banana468!  The kids see the dentist in March and I'm expecting to get the "it's time for braces" talk for at least one of them.

Woke up extra early to make the kids heart-shaped pancakes this morning, and we'll do a heart-shaped pizza for dinner.  I do like to lean into a holiday, especially via food.
Schools are closed here next week for Presidents' Week.  A couple day trips planned, and a lot of cleaning and decluttering.  We're also supposed to get a lot of winter weather and it'll be nice to not be shoveling and cleaning off the car before dawn.
  • I wish we had a full week off.  We get Mon/Tue and that's it.
  • Oooo, @Casadena, have the best time.  I really like her.

Her stand-up is so good! I am so looking forward to it!
  • Bummer about the trip @VarunaTT but it sounds like tonight will be a blast!

You can have one of my grandmother's blenders @banana468. I found three when I was cleaning up her kitchen. And when I asked why she told me, "It's because they all do different things better." lol

I hope everyone has a nice relaxing Valentine's Day, whether it's spent curled up on the couch watching a show, going out with friends, or with your SO.

I think the rain is finishing up today. It rained a lot yesterday. All of the streets were flooded and getting home was a little dicey. Otherwise, SSDD. Going to the grandparent's tomorrow but I think we will come home Sunday this time. I guess it depends how things look when we get there.

H and I are supposed to go into the city for a comedy show tonight so hopefully everything goes smoothly, everyone feels good, and we get out on time! I got tickets for this like 8 months ago and i'd be bummed to miss her (Taylor Tomlinson).

    I'll post Prudie from yesterday.
Oh she looks good. She’s been showing up on my feed a lot lately.
And yay to get paid to read…. I feel like that’s the only way I’d be able to these days

I get nothing. Not even Monday.  They are stingy with holidays at my work, smh.

If reincarnation exists, I want to come back as a kid in a NYC school district.  I'm often surprised at all the school holidays @ei34 talks about, lol.

  • This whole day has gone way off kilter.  I woke up feeling really nauseous.  My blood glucose had been high all night and was 305 headed straight up.  Welp, yeah.  That will do it.  Fridays are my half day.  I e-mailed my boss that I would be two hours later, but still work my normal hours.  Threw up about 15 minutes later and went back to bed.  I ended up being 3 hours late (sigh).  Except I had a bunch of errands I was going to run today and now I'm only doing 1 or 2.  My BG has been fine for a few hours, but when I spend the morning feeling crappy, it lingers on.

I've also been totally unmotivated to do any work.  And I did jinx myself the other day, lol.  I've been really busy and have two things I should be getting out today.  And it's timesheet day, which takes at least 30 minutes to fill out.

My H and I don't usually celebrate Valentine's Day.  But I found a cute, perfect dress for the occasion in my closet that fits me now.  It's red and has a heart shaped cutout in the back.  I got him a few little chocolaty gifts and a funny mug that fits him to a T.  I told him I wanted a romantic dinner at home.  But now I'm feeling curmudgeony and don't want to pick anything up.  Our "romantic" dinner will have to be leftovers, lol.

Tomorrow will be the errands I'm not running today, lol.  But I'm sure the rest of the weekend will go better.

  • @short+sassy Chiquita came home needing to pop a load of  Tums.  I guess Cupid shot an arrow to her heart and it burns.

Also, FWIW I think @ei34 has the latest school year of all of us so the kids get out way late in June while @mrsconn23 I think has a late May end time.

By being in such a diverse area @ei34 also has a lot of additional religious holidays.  I grew up at the other end of the state and we had days off in September for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.  My mom taught in the neighboring city and they had more holidays off due to the teachers and students that were affected.  Living at a different end of the state the Jewish population here is much smaller and consequently we do not have those holidays off.

A kid??!!! NO come back as a teacher!! The students have too much work to do 😝 though I would actually recommend NYC over the nyc ‘burbs, we start early and end late, ending up with 186 instructional days, which is well over the national average. I think NYC is right around 180-181.

ETA and ditto @banana468, the Jewish high Holy days plus Diwali, Lunar New Year, both Eid’s, etc. It is definitely not white Christian America here.

I was thinking more I have to be a kid first, lol.  I'd need to be reincarnated with a different personality to be interested in teaching.  No slam at all on that profession!  It's one of the careers I admire the most.  It's just not me.

Today I learned!  I knew NYC had boroughs, but I always assumed they and the suburbs were all part of the same county.  Because that is what the big CA cities are like.  But I just Googled it and see that I am wrong!  Each borough is also its own county.

New Orleans is weird like that also.  We're the only state with parishes instead of counties.  The city proper is only one parish, ie the only city in Orleans Parish is New Orleans.  But our nearby suburbs are in a variety of parishes.  Not even the same one, lol.

It caused confusion when I first moved here, lol.  I'd ask if people if they were originally from/grew up in New Orleans.  I was talking about the general area.  But people would take it literally and say, "Oh no!  I grew up in (mentioned a next door or less than 20 minutes away suburb town). " LMAO.  I quickly learned to rephrase it as "did you grow up in Southern Louisiana".

I've had fun conversations outside of CA.  Someone will tell me they are from San Diego.  I already know they might be referring to their county and not their city.  I get excited and tell them I grew up in San Clemente and graduated from San Marcos (northern SD county).  They'll get excited and then specify the city in SD county they live in.

And vice versa.  If people ask me where I grew up, I say, "Orange County, CA."  Unless you've lived in southern CA or remember when Nixon was president, few people have heard of San Clemente.   But as soon as they mention living/having lived in CA, they usually ask where and I'm excited to talk to someone that's heard of my sleepy hometown, lol.

  • The county thing is an east coast/west coast thing. Eastern counties are generally much smaller because they were established much earlier in transportation history.

Fun fact, Georgia has the highest number of counties in the country in spite of not actually being that large. I used to go to court in these southern counties that would have a population of 2,500, and I never could figure out how they had enough people to afford a courthouse. But the courthouse was usually either a million years old or a single room in a two story building that housed the entire county and city governments, and the staff would circuit around a 3-5 county region. Really rural places are so wild to me.
