Requiring “password” to enter reception venue

We’re holding our wedding reception at a speak easy bar on a day they are closed to the public. The owner suggested we provide our guests with a “secret password” in order to keep it a private event. Has anyone ever done something similar? I’m just not sure how to convey the information on my invitations?

Re: Requiring “password” to enter reception venue

  • Can you make the password something easy for guests like "Gellar Bing Wedding"?  Theoretically non guests won't know that right??

Could you also have someone at the door checking names with a seating chart so they're looking like they're getting table assignments at the same time?  I feel like if I asked some of the older relatives to remember a password they would still be at the door 17+years later.
  • If someone is at the door asking for a password, why not just give that person a list of guests? Then people give their names and get let in.

Maybe your friends and family are all super organized type A people, but getting my people to the right building on time was a feat in itself. Having them try to remember a password would have really meant my husband or I standing outside telling people the password or our phones blowing up from people outside who couldn't get in.
  • Have a guest list and someone to check it. Make sure the list is accurate.
