Hoping for smooth sailing at work today.
This evening I’m bringing my DD and her bestie for mani/pedis and then for bubble tea as a birthday celebration.

The weekend is thankfully pretty light.  Tomorrow I’m bringing my brother a meal or two and some groceries, he had a small podiatry procedure and isn’t really on his feet yet. Going to catch some of my niece’s softball game in a neighboring town, and will attempt Saturday evening Vigil Mass.

Sunday morning we have a Boy Scout thing at the nearest lighthouse (and it also happens to be one of my favorite beaches), meetup is 8am which is nice, I prefer that to right in the middle of the day events. And I told my dad I’d help him uncover my parents’ pool, it’s not warm enough for swimming yet, but he likes to have it ready for MDW.  Not sure when he wants to do it yet.  So little things here and there but definitely less busy than usual.
  • Work feels relentless lately. Like I can’t get a break in new problems to just get to a good baseline BAU. One of my teams is knocking it out of the park, adapting to change and problems well, and the other is —not. And they’re giving their manager a really hard time.

The weather is finally beautiful in Buffalo and we’re getting estimates for AC today and Monday. We’ve lived in this house for almost 7 years without it and I refuse to go another summer with window units and fans.

@charlotte989875 is there one team member you’ve identified in the other group that’s bringing everyone down to their level or is it just kind of all of them. Good vibes your way.

    @VarunaTT

SSDD over here. Work today. We’ve been watching Eurovision and it’s so fun. So much camp. I love it. Tomorrow H wants to go to a health fair nearby. He commented on it in a community meeting and wants to see how it goes. Then we have a belated Mother’s Day with his parents and we’re going out for dinner. Luckily Sunday we don’t have any real plans.

Checking in from my phone because the Knut is displaying weird on the laptop.

A few things going on this weekend. Our city Pride Fest is Saturday and our church is a sponsor and will have a booth. DH and I made cookies last night for the booth.
We are headed to DH’s family cemetery tomorrow to put out flowers. We’ll also stop at a relative and pick up the address list for the family reunion. DH and sister’s are in charge this year.

Sunday I’m worship leader and then some chore catch up and chill. I haven’t been sleeping well, so maybe a nap!

We were in the 80s for temps this week. A front moved through yesterday and temps are now in the 60s. But it’s sunny so I love it.

Work has been unsettled lately. We had work unit climate interviews with HR. Sounds like most of us gave the same responses for strengths and challenges in our unit. Since then our manager has been distant. Not sure if these things were a surprise for her or if she was spoken to by leadership but she’s different. We are also absorbing 2 other work units from our other sites. Lots of changes. We are in clinical research and Administration decisions that are impacting FDA, NIH and other agencies make things feel unstable.

Happy birthday to DD @ei34 again, glad exH showed up!
@charlotte989875  hopefully manager is distant for perhaps other reasons? GL! Edit; I  mean @MNNEBride. I can read.
@levioosa what’s at this health fair? I’d almost want to go if it displayed foods/vitamins/supplements. Not work out equipment.  Eff working out lol

weather is beautiful right now. I have to get out and plant my ‘forget me not’s’ today because I hear it’ll rain tonight.
Last night was a super fun fashion show at a community college. Tonight is Titanic, the musical, tomorrow is dinner and a comedy show with meetup and Sunday is a girls afternoon tea. I had/have super fun outfits for all. Let me tell you, ever since making goal weight, clothes shopping is fun now. I ordered some cute tops and they came in yesterday and I was like “no way is this going to fit” but much to my surprise, it did!
Any recipes or ideas for the potluck tea? I’m thinking those cream cheese roll ups.

@charmedpam I have no idea. But H has gotten super involved in the community and insists we go. I guess from a public health perspective it will be good for me to go and look and see if I have any critiques for next year. I was trying to do something for it this year but their meetings were all during work hours. As far as tea ideas, cream cheese cucumber sandwiches or a mini chicken salad sandwich with cranberries are great. You could also take a sheet of puff pastry, cut it into squares, and cook it with an apple and Brie or do something like fig jam with a cheese. Or make mini no bake cheesecakes for dessert.

@mrsconn23 it was so good to “see” you the other day! And I so happy to hear about SIL/BIL and nephew.

I'm sooooo glad it's the weekend. I'm off in a couple of hours. My Knut is displaying weird on my desktop too, so I'm on my phone, which I despise. I type so slow with so many typos on my phone. I miss my HTC with a slider keyboard.

No big plans. I may take myself to a movie. Seeing/helping Mom on Sunday. Otherwise just resting.
  • It was very WTF!  I live less than two miles from the city jail.  Fortunately it happened right before the weekend, so I wasn't out and about as much.  But I stayed on higher alert than usual.

They determined there had been inside help.

I would think so too. We’ll have to wait for the lifetime movie. Are they still at large?
there was an article blaming The Annabell doll having to do with it because it “toured” the city. That and the plantation that burned down.
    https://www.shreveporttimes.com/story/news/2025/05/16/why-was-the-haunted-annabelle-doll-in-new-orleans-when-does-doll-leave-paranormal-ghost-city-tours/83668489007/

  • Now they are saying it was 10 people who escaped.  Three of them were captured fairly quickly, I think it was the same day.  A 4th inmate was captured yesterday.  Six are still at large.

I was reading comments about the Annabelle doll in relation to the Nottoway plantation that burned down, but didn't understand the reference other than the movies.  Thanks for the link.

I can see why people at least jokingly made a connection between a 150+ year old famous mansion suddenly burning down while a creepy malevolent doll was in the state, though not that close by.

    -------------

But a much better and closer choice for Annabelle's vengeance would have been to burn down the LaLaurie Mansion.  It's considered the most haunted building in New Orleans.  Madame LaLaurie and her doctor husband resided in the home from 1831-1834.

She is considered one of the most prolific and cruelest serial killers of all time, man or woman.  It's estimated she killed 57 of her slaves and brutally tortured all of them.  Some of them in ways that horrified even her fellow high society, slave owning friends when her secrets came out.

We went on a "Voodoo" walking tour last time we were in NOrleans and this was one of the stops. Fascinating and terrible. The tour was great though and would highly recommend.

Ohh no to that doll.  The Warrens have it and I'm not sure what happened to them but I think their museum is still around and they absolutely scare the crap out of me.  I grew up a town over from them so tons of people I knew went to see them speak including me.  I had to leave early because i was so rattled.

    No thanks I'm good!
  • There’s even a worse doll! Look up Robert in Key West. But you didn’t hear it from me….

According to the article, the doll still normally resides at the Warren's Occult Museum in CT.  But they sometimes do traveling tours of their artifacts.  I'd guess Annabelle is one of their biggest draws and is usually brought along.

Yeah - the museum is a town over from my parents.  And the doll is a major draw as are the videos they have a dude possessed plus plenty of other things.

    Nope.

@short+sassy didn’t American Horror Story base a character off of her in their New Orleans season? It might have even been her, I can’t remember

  • @leviosaa, yup! And Kathy Bates played her

I've never watched that show but just looked up the Wiki for that season.

Yep!  Same person.  Apparently the still alive Madame LaLaurie, who had spent the past 180 years buried alive, is dug back up and becomes a major part for one of the story lines.

In the show, LaLaurie had killed one of Marie Laveau's...real person, famous Voodoo Queen from that time period...friends.

For revenge, Marie Laveau killed LaLaurie's family.  Then gave her an immortality elixir and buried her alive.  Laveau is also still alive in the present day.

    -------

I have the perfect tie-in for creepy objects and Marie Laveau, lol!  True story (maybe).

A mummified cat was (supposedly) found buried under the site of Ms. Laveau's house.  It was displayed for years at one of the bars in the FQ.  I've seen it, though can't verify if it was mummified or stuffed.  I can't remember when this happened, but I had a friend in from out of town.  We were walking past the bar and I told her, "Oh!  This is where Marie Laveau's mummified cat is.  Let's pop in and see it."

It had normally been at the very top of the bar, about in the middle.  It wasn't there.  I asked the bartender, "Where's the cat?"  He said they didn't know.  It had just disappeared one day.  They think someone stole it.

I just looked up the history of her house site.  I knew her original house was no longer there and had been replaced by another house.  I wanted to see when it was the most likely this cat had been dug up.  The house was replaced in 1903.

Then I saw a link about the current house from our local newspaper, that it had been badly damaged in a fire.  I assumed it was an article from the past and clicked on it.

In complete shock, I checked the date at least 5 times.  I looked for another article in a different newspaper because I could not be seeing what I was seeing.

That house caught on fire YESTERDAY!  GTFO.  Chills!

I'm not going to talk about Annabelle anymore, lol.

I'm really looking forward to the next weekend because I have to meet a friend I haven't seen in six months. In addition, this weekend I plan to set a challenge for myself https://betterme.world/articles/30-day-calisthenics-challenge/ which I hope to complete and see great results. I hope everything goes well, because now, even before I'm halfway through, I see great progress.
