Wedding Woes

Not something you address

Dear Prudence,

When my in-laws stayed with me and my husband for a week (this was their first such visit), I learned something disgusting about my mother-in-law.

She does not adequately wipe her butt. While doing the laundry, I discovered prominent skid marks on all of her underwear. I was thoroughly grossed out. What’s a tactful way of addressing this with her for the next time she and my father-in-law are over?

Re: Not something you address

  • You don’t. Also why were you doing her laundry? I believe the way to not learn these things about your in laws is to go no where near their underwear.

I’ll go so far as why were they staying with you, but I know that’s a thing in a lot of families/areas without hotels or Airbnb’s nearby. But…WHY were you doing her laundry?!!!
  • "Just let me know if you guys need to use the laundry and I'll show you where the detergent is!"

  • I have the opposite problem in that my MIL wants to do the laundry when she visits which makes me terribly uncomfortable. But who the hell does laundry for a house guest?

Are we talking about an overnight visit or a multi day/week long visit? For 3-5 days barring an unfortunate circumstance I wouldn't need to do laundry, but I can only overpack so many excessive pairs of underwear for a trip. lol

  • I mean, I've let people do laundry in my house but I can't imagine washing the undies of people who don't live here.

If it's to the point that there's odors then speak up.

Oh for sure; I don't think anyone needs to pack 2 weeks worth of stuff. I'd just ask to borrow the washer as a guest, or offer the laundry room when people visit us. I wouldn't do it for them.
