Hump Day

How’s everyone? Wishing all a good day!

Re: Hump Day

  • Dragging over here, but at least it’s a lighter day. I do want to the weekend though!
  • It's a rainy day and I can tell as my body drags!

It feels like autumn is quickly approaching as I wear a sweater and am not sweating it out!  I'm out of the office for the morning while I take Chiquita to be topped up but will be back for the slew of kid appointments and sports later.
  • Feeling better today than yesterday. I got my moody mood moods out of my system. I was sad and depressed but realized I had every right to be since I was shown a different person before. What else is new?
However, during the day I found out that my back up didn’t do something while I was away on vacation last month and I’m really PO’d at that group. I’m gone for 5 days but they never touch the work on the last day and leave it for me. I should know how they work and often “joked” “guess if I take 5 days off, it’s really 4”. I came back snd assumed they did everything on the last day. They did not and it was found out yesterday (over 1 month later). Like, I would never ignore a job task coming in because that person would be back the next day. But that’s just me and how our office always worked (my backup is from another office).
Is anyone else on a glp-1 besides S&S and Levioosa? I noticed lately that my “being full faster” is kinda wearing off (I’ve been on it for years and you do come accustomed to it) but lately I also noticed meals just taste blah now. No flavor. Bad texture. Home cooked and take out/ordered. I don’t want to finish not because I’m full but because I’m sick of eating it. I’m just done eating for the fact that I don’t like the food.
now - if it has sugar in it, different story. Still love sweets. Not sure how that helps diabetics. Everyone says they take the sweets cravings away. Naw. They’re still there.

  • I can't tell if we're getting our second fake fall or if fall is actually happening early here. I'd like to turn the AC off, but not if it's going to be back up to 90 next week. I think the worst of the humidity is done at least, so it's not so bad even if it does get warmer.

Nothing much else going on around here. I'm trying to make some plans for fall and holidays, but everything is dependent on someone else's schedule and it's annoying. My friend group is trying to plan a trip to Kentucky to do the bourbon trail the weekend before Thanksgiving, but we need to commit soon. Apparently that's a busy time and things get booked up in advance. It would be cool, though, because then I could stay and do T-giving with family and then head home that Friday.
  • It was very fallish this morning. Overcast with a little bit of a breeze. It will burn off in a few hours. I almost needed a sweater on my walk last night.

@CharmedPam I didn't have an issue with the medication until my prescribed tried to titrate me down last year. Then I gained weight back, we titrated back up but the second up titration doesn't feel like it works the same. I'm back up to the max dose this week and I definitely have some appetite suppression but it's not nearly the same. I will say the nausea has improved a little because it was borderline intolerable before and I do appreciate being able to eat more than five bites of food because trying to keep up with fiber and protein and being so full was miserable for awhile. It's still a struggle but not as bad as it used to be at all. Thankfully I don't have any issues with food not tasting good. Some issues with "eh, nooothing sounds good to me for dinner" but when I'm eating it I'm fine.

Work today. The schedule is a mess. Otherwise, SSDD. I am sleepy.

  • I'm ready for the weekend.  Hopefully I can get my hair done this weekend, the roots are showing badly.  I'm also helping design/construct a costume for a friend for a burlesque show, which I'm looking forward to.  I loved helping K create their costumes, so it's fun to flex these muscles again.  The inspiration is "Him" from Powderpuff Girls, so even more fun.

Still going through things, purging, unpacking, and gathering more stuff.  I'll hang my TV this weekend and get that organized, which'll result in more furniture being sold.  I'm not really minding the slimming down of stuff.  I loved that old apartment, but it was big and I never needed all of the stuff I had for it.

I think my mother is finally realizing that our relationship is broken.  I am still so angry and hurt with her (TL;DR version; our final argument she told me she never wanted me there, she didn't need help, that I had had just told her I was moving in and she cooperated, and I had destroyed her life) and I don't want to talk to her at all right now unless she needs something.

    Otherwise, SSDD.
  • @VarunaTT, ouch! That’s gotta hurt
i always got the “nothing sounds good” feeling even before this. It’s hard picking out meals everyday. My friend started it a few months ago and she’s been told to stay on the dosage she’s on until she stops loosing, then she gets bumped. It seems low to me (5mg).
That being said we ordered from a BBQ place Monday and I had the best pulled turkey tacos I ever had. I mentioned to our admin that I liked that place and it was the best meal I had in awhile. She ordered it again today :)

  • @CharmedPam I am ecstatic (and jealous) when my patients lose weight and continue to lose on lower doses. I was a very slow responder, so slow my prescriber almost stopped it but I told her I wanted to make it the six months and get to max dose before we said it wasn't working officially. It took me until the 2 mg Semaglutide and six months in to see any meaningful weight loss. I would have saved a lot of money too if I could have lost at a lower dose. You don't have to up titrate for the sake of up titrating. If you're having great weight loss at a lower dose, you can keep it there until the plateau starts to happen.

  • Has anyone ever used a registered dietitian? I’m like 25-30 pounds over what I’d like to be. I know I don’t eat as well as I should or drink enough water. Has anyone found results this way?

    Things are good here otherwise.
  • @charlotte989875 I haven't ever used one but I've referred to them. I wish they were a more readily and covered benefit for people. I personally would enjoy having one just to get out of the meal rut. There's so many fun ways to eat healthy but it takes extra effort to figure out new meals. For many people (not saying you personally), they have no idea how poor their diet really is. I've literally had a conversation 4 times today alone that "no, you don't in fact eat enough fiber if you're telling me your average breakfast is eggs with bacon and sausage and dinner is meat and potatoes." It can also be hard to get an accurate macros plan with all of the misinformation out there. Medical schools don't delve into nutrition very extensively. We know the basics, but there's a reason a RD is an entire degree and license. It's possible to fight through the misinformation and build up a really good plan yourself, but it's not exactly easy. I have a previous related degree which has helped but I've done a shit ton of research on my own and (not to brag) I know my knowledge about nutrition is above average for my clinic at least. Not to sound all RFK conspiracy theorist, but it's a real blind spot in our medical system. Then you layer on how we are pressured to force people through their appointments to squeeze more in, the fact that many patients don't have access or money to cook a healthy meal, and it's a whole shit storm. I personally work in a food desert, and it is so so hard to look a patient with such extreme limitations and be like, "chia seeds are a great source of fiber!" Add in some cultural barriers to eating healthier, a lack of infrastructure to support healthy diets and exercise, and of course my area has a crazy high rate of multiple comorbid conditions.

Anyways, I started ranting again because this country is a hellscape. TLDR, I think RDs are great and can help especially if you need help getting out of a rut or rethinking some of your meal plans to help optimize goals.

  • Thank you so much @levioosa!!! I just an initial appointment with someone today and felt a little silly- like I know my diet isn’t good. And I know “protein, vegetables, fiber are good. Limit sugar, cholesterol” but like also how and how much finger/fat/protein/carbs and what is good sources of protein when I have zero time?

So I’m hoping it works out!

Don't feel silly! It's not intuitive at all! Half of our food has been villainized at some point or the other (eggs, coffee, I'm looking at you) and it can be really hard to figure out macros in general. My New Year's resolution last year was to eat the recommended amount of fiber and honestly? It's hard. Add in kids to the mix and finding quick, healthy meals is so hard to put together if you don't already have a plan in place (and who has time for that?!). Eating healthy is obviously good for us, but it takes a mental toll to plan, shop, prep and cook. And we are just inundated with influencers who claim "healthy quick meals" that either aren't as healthy as they seem, or that are just outright lies about how realistic and quick they are to prepare.

  • @charlotte989875, I saw an RD 30 years ago when I was first diagnosed with T1 diabetes.  Very different reason than yourself, but she was INCREDIBLY helpful in providing me a lot of knowledge about food that I was not aware of.  Specifically for me, it was about balancing carbs and warning me about food items/sauces that are very high in sugar even though they don't taste like it.

Oddly enough, I'm thinking about seeing one again now that I am in maintenance for my weight loss.  For the first time ever, I DON"T want to lose any more weight.  But after 40+ years of always worrying about calories, it's hard to change course.  Now I have the opposite problem and worry about eating enough calories every day.  But it can't be too crazy either or I'll start gaining weight.  It's a narrow calorie window to stay in maintenance when you're only 5'0" tall.

I'm a pretty lazy cook, but focused on protein both now and when I was losing weight.  Here is a list of my quick go-to protein snacks and meals:
    • Low carb protein drinks
    • Low carb yogurt
    • Cheese slices and sticks.  Sometimes I pair it with slices of deli meat for more of a meal.  Like a sandwich, but without the bread.
    • Speaking of bread, I always get low-carb or keto bread.
    • I hard boil about 6 eggs at a time, so I always have one handy for a low-cal/high protein snack.
    • Canned chicken soup that I add chicken breast chunks to so I can oomph up the protein.  Guilty secret:  I use Kirkland's (Costco) brand of canned chicken breast chunks.  Usually 1/3 to 1/2 a can for each can of soup.
    • Fish or shrimp both cook up very fast in a pan.  I also buy frozen already cooked/peeled shrimp from Costco.  Defrost them and throw them in a salad.
    • 1 lb of lean ground beef cooked in a pan with 1 can of non-fat refried beans and some taco seasoning.  Add veggies if desired.  After cooking, top with your favorite taco bar items like avocado/cheese/sour cream/salsa/etc.
    • Open a can of tuna.  Mix with low-fat mayo and your favorite seasonings.  Yellow curry powder is a surprising, but delicious choice.

I just want to add to @short+sassy that I just discovered clear protein and I am so happy about it.  You just add it to water and you basically have a flavored water that's also giving you 20 grams of protein.  I really just don't like smoothies and it was difficult getting enough protein in my body through food.

I'm using the Isopure because Reddit reviews of the flavors were solid.  I've had the watermelon and the lemonade.  I'm considering just getting the non-flavored and adding it into my crystal light drinks.  There are a few brands.  Seeq also gets solid reviews.
  • @CharmedPam and @levioosa, I've been taking tirzepatide (active ingredient in Mounjaro/Zepbound) for over two years now.  I was fortunate to only have bad side effects the first few days.  TMI, I do have to battle constipation but OTC medications have been working well for that.

My appetite suppression has been exactly the same on doses from 5mg/week to 15mg/week.  I didn't have any appetite suppression on 2.5mg/week, but I also only took that dose for my first three weeks so it may have had more to do with the medication not having built up in my system yet.  My appetite suppression has never waned either.  But I realize I'm unusual on both of those fronts.

Murphy's Law.  I'm one of the few people who doesn't like the appetite suppression side effect, so of course it's been strong and steady for me almost the whole time, lol.  Especially now that I have to eat more calories to maintain, I WISH I could give at least half of it to somebody who wants it.

I tried all the dosages and eventually settled in at 10mg/week.  That's the dose where the reduction to my insulin resistance is optimized.  Higher doses didn't help it further.  Lower doses helped it tremendously, even 2.5mg, but I had to take more insulin than I do at 10mg.

This medication also hasn't had any effect on what foods I like to eat, though I hear that all the time from other people on GLP-1s.  They often have an aversion to sweets or fatty foods or both.  It hasn't changed the flavor of foods for me either, other than my tolerance for "spicy" has gone down.

A lot of people also talk about having an aversion to alcohol after starting a GLP-1.  I don't have that either.  I still love my glasses of wine and favorite cocktails as much as always.  BUT I cut way back on alcohol when I was losing weight because it's terrible for that.  Now that I've lost over half my original body weight, I HAVE to drink less because effects are so strongly tied to weight.

But that alcohol aversion many people have is very exciting.  Pharm companies have taken notice and there have already been studies looking into using this medication to treat alcoholism.  I don't think there have been clinical trials yet, but I strongly suspect we will be seeing that in the future.  The studies are looking good for it.  Anecdotally, I've heard tons of stories...including from former alcoholics...who said it was like someone turned a switch off in their brain to desire alcohol, after they started taking a GLP-1.

  • I am so happy that ultra-filtered milk products (yes, I know, Fair Life has gotten a lot of flack) exist now. Regular pre-made protein shakes make me nauseous and they taste gross. I love my morning Fair Life Strawberry Banana milk shake. It was also fantastic to use it for a smoothie with spinach, some berries, and high protein yoghurt. It was higher on the carb end but I added enough fiber to slow it down and then I would watch my carbs the rest of the day. My other morning go to for awhile was the yoplait high protein yoghurt with chia seeds to get protein, my calcium, and fiber. Instant oatmeal with sliced apple, chia seeds and cinnamon was also a favorite go to.

I'm not a big lunch eater, but I'll get roast chicken breast, and have that with carrots and hummus. For a super quick and easy dinner I'll roast chicken breast tenders with a rough chopped onion and bellpepper. Drizzle with some olive oil, use the 21 seasoning salute from TJ on the chicken and garlic and onion powder on the veggies and bam, dinner is ready in literally 30 minutes including prep time. I do something similar with baked salmon.

For all of my fixation on protein, I have only recently learned about the clear proteins that can be added to water.  Thanks for mentioning it and the recommendation.

Prime Days is coming up in the first half of October.  That would be a good time to expand my drinkable protein horizons.
