Do you have a friend who would join?

Dear Prudence,

I know some people can be homebodies, but I feel like I might have something going on deeper than that. I see everyone with some stories to tell of places they’ve been and experiences they have gone through, and I can’t help but realize how dull and empty my life has been for 29 years. I don’t travel at all. France, Japan, South America, and many others are places I would love to see but something is preventing me from accomplishing that. I feel like the kid at Walmart who was lost looking for his mother. I’ve never been comfortable solo traveling, and it feels like I don’t know how. I hate this feeling. I want to be well-traveled and spread my wings, if that makes sense. I’m not getting any younger. I want to make memories too, but I get severely cold feet? What’s wrong with me? How do I take those first steps?

  • I think a group tour/trip with a company that specializes in solo travelers would be a good option for OP.  She may meet folks on the trip that she would feel comfortable traveling with in the future.

  • Ditto - I'd start with a tour group.
  • Tour group is a good idea, but I'm also thinking this might be something to talk through with a therapist. This sounds like a lot of anxiety. A lot of people are nervous about travelling alone, but LW sounds like they're so in their head about having not travelled.

I'm thinking about doing something like this myself.  There is nothing I like better than traveling, but my H can't get a passport without paying a huge sum of money (long story).

I see amazing travel deals all the time and it's frustrating I can't take advantage of them.  "Repositioning" cruises are especially crazy deals, though that might need to wait for retirement because they are typically 3-4 weeks long.

Some cruise ships run different routes at different times of the year.  When they are repositioning to their next route, I've seen prices like $50/night double occupancy.  Then you still get to go on the full "normal" cruise when it arrives at the new destination, for that same "all in one" rate.
