Hump Day

How's everyone?  Hope all are doing okay.

Re: Hump Day

  • Tired today. Both boys were up in the night and N woke up just in a rage this morning. Definitely not the best tone for the day. Long afternoon of meetings! Out of town for meetings tomorrow during the day and looking forward tot he weekend already.
  • How fun to have babies around @mrsconn23! Glad to "see" you back and hear that you and the fam are doing well!
  • Good to “see” you @mrsconn23! I’m glad you are doing well!

SSDD today. We planned our Yosemite trip for next year. I think we’re gonna try to stop in Napa before we go. I’m not gonna lie, the hotel situation feels overwhelming. There’s so many. I spent two seconds looking at Auberge because it looked really nice and then lol-ed at my delusion because it was $1300 a night. It was nice to fantasize for a second. Curse this bougie body of mine.

Otherwise, not too much else is happening.

  • Glad to see you @mrsconn23 and yay for the babies and the smooth transition at work
A Yosemite / Napa combo sounds glorious @levioosa
  • Work is busy AF right now.  We're short a support staff and an attorney.  But the team is coming together to make it all happen and I just really love that.  My manager just told me she's retiring.  I'm happy for her, sad for me.  She's honestly the best manager I've ever had.  I hope they replace her with someone else as good.

I'm getting furniture out of this studio today, so I can finally start moving around and not getting weird bruises from bumping into the things that are leaving.  TBH I'm enjoying the purge.  I never would've had all of this stuff if I didn't have a 1650 square foot space to fill and I'm fine with it heading out.  I'm a minimalist at heart, just with a lot of color and style, no beige.

HI @mrsconn23!!!  Glad to see you back.

    Otherwise, SSDD.

  • Well almost jinx, @VarunaTT. My group is going through a reorg right now and today is the day we met with our VP to learn our fate. My role is changing a little, but I'm safe. I just found out about an hour ago that my boss is impacted. They're eliminating her current role and I think a couple others at her level, and then creating a new one so I have no idea who I'll be reporting to. I've worked with my her for 10 years and finally started reporting to her 2 years ago. I'm so sad and so, so heartbroken for her. (I don't know if she'll go out for the new role or not.)

Nothing much else happening. I am fully unmotivated to do work right now.
  • @MyNameIsNot—I'm sorry for your boss and the unknowns that a reorg causes. We are in the same boat here. With the instability at work and in our country, it's hard to feel stable.

I'm unmotivated to work right now, too. I'd love to log off and craft for the rest of the night, but alas, that's not going to happen.

  • @MyNameIsNot, I'm glad to hear your job is safe, but sorry to hear about your manager.  Especially since you like her, I assume she is a good person.

I was part of a huge buyout in college.  Bank of America bought Security Pacific Bank.  Almost all the branches were combined with another one.  No tellers (my position) were laid off because there were just as many total customers as there had always been.  But something like 30-40% of the managers, both in branch and at corporate, were laid off because those roles were duplicates.

@levioosa, when I was looking at beach front properties in Thailand, I saw cute one-bedroom beach bungalows.  Your patio is ON the beach, about 30 yards from the ocean.  $44/night, so about $1250/month and it can probably be bargained down cheaper for a month long or longer stay.  That could work!  I'm not shipping 99% of my stuff across the Pacific Ocean anyway.  It beckons to me.

But now for the LUXURY side of things, like wanting to stay at a high end 4-star hotel in Napa.

For funsies, I looked at palatial villas in the same city.  4-5 bedrooms, 3000+sq ft, huge gourmet kitchens, private pools.  One of them was built just a few feet from the ocean.  Three stories and the top two had a deck built over the ocean.  The top story had an infinity pool on it.  If you're on the ocean side of the pool, it looks like your surrounded by the ocean.  GORGEOUS!

About $500/night, $15K/month.  They'd probably give a discount for longer stays also, lol.  As if that matters.  I'd still need to own at least 60 rentals in the US to support THAT kind of ex-pat lifestyle!
