"ooh they should get that checked out"

Dear Prudence,

I’m a doctor, and when people find out, they think it’s perfectly acceptable to launch into the details of whatever malady they or someone they are close to happen to be experiencing. What can I do to get people to understand that this is my free time and that I’m not on the clock?

—No Appointment, No Diagnosis

Re: "ooh they should get that checked out"

  • [Not a doctor] but I never out myself to strangers. Other people do it for me or I try to side step and they get so nosy that eventually I end up answering. "Oh, I would schedule an appointment with your PCP to discuss your concerns." If I see something that I feel is potentially life threatening I might say something and still suggest ER or PCP depending on how acute it is, but that pretty much never happens. I will never understand people who go up to strangers and get up in their healthcare business.
