Eloping, But Want A Reception?

My fiancé and I are eloping locally with a few family members because the thought of a full wedding makes me anxious. We will be hosting a large reception/after party months later with food and drinks. I still would love to have a "wedding party" at our reception because my friends are so special to me and that's the only part that makes me sad about eloping. I don't expect them to buy special dresses or have "jobs", just want them to be honorary wedding party members and get some photos. Not sure if this is weird?

    Not weird! It's a thoughtful way to celebrate with your friends without the pressure of a traditional wedding.

    It's a little weird but it's a party.  If you want people close to you at a party, go for it especially if you're not asking them to do anything but be there with you.

    It's a little weird to call them wedding party or bridesmaids since it's not a wedding and you won't be a bride, but it would be really cool to honor your closest friends with some corsages or something and celebrate your friendship at a big party.

    You're having a small wedding (eloping = no one knows about a couple's wedding until after the fact...private wedding = folks close to the couple know, but no one is invited).  Can't help pointing out, I'm a word nerd.

    I think your plan is fine, since you won't be requiring specific dresses or expecting certain jobs to be done.  I'd just be mindful to not make any guests feel "less than".  Ex: you have a 12-person friend table, and at some point during your party the photographer comes around and asks 5 of them to go take a picture with you.  Things like that.  But as long as it's properly hosted for the time of day and there are no required outfits or roles, I think it sounds fine.
