Don't go, or let them celebrate you both

Dear Prudence,

My twin sister “Allie” and I will be turning 30 early next year, and our older sister offered to throw us a party. Allie would love to have a party. I hate being the center of attention, so I don’t really want to have a party. Of course, there’s no reason that Allie can’t have a solo party. My problem is, I’d love to attend a party, specifically for Allie. She’s the best and I hate to miss out on an opportunity to celebrate her. But it seems unrealistic to think that I’ll show up for my twin sister’s birthday party and no one will acknowledge that it’s also my birthday. I’m a little worried that attending as a guest will actually backfire, and I’ll end up fielding a lot of questions about why it’s only Allie’s party. What’s the best way to handle this situation? Or should I just give up on going to the party and celebrate with Allie at another time?

  • The LW would also get a lot of questions if she is not at Allie's birthday party, but maybe it's easier for her to field questions later than actually going.

I don't know how bad the LW's social anxiety is, but if it wouldn't be too bad, another compromise could be she attends late and then leaves after cake.  Makes an appearance for 1-2 hours

  • This is so wild to me. You'd go to a party and be fine with that, but if your name is attached to a party you don't want to? I just don't see how different the actual event would be for her - you're 30. People might sing happy birthday but it's not like you're opening presents and leading games or up on stage, etc etc. Overall it just doesn't seem like it would be that different to me. Like, people might say happy birthday, then it's just a regular party.

All that said, if LW doesn't want to go, just dont'. It will be odd i think, but seems like she'd be more comfortable with that.
