donate it

Dear Prudence,

I moved into my family-owned apartment nearly two years ago. My brother had been living in it before me. He allowed a friend of his to use our apartment storage unit while she traveled. She’s never picked up her two huge boxes of things—some clothes, shoes, and kitchen items. I asked him, and he said she has nothing left in the unit. I don’t know her or have her contact information. Can I donate the items, or do I have to ask him again to contact the friend?

Re: donate it

  • Can you take pictures of the two boxes, maybe what's inside them and text them to your brother?  Ask him to text the friend and double check that she doesn't need them.

A brain fart may make her think she doesn't need the items and it may help jog the memory before you just donate the stuff.
  • Donate it. It's been 2 years; if she needed it she would have asked by now. It's not your responsibility to chase her around.

I'd also add to the text that those things will be disposed of in 14 days, if the friend doesn't reply back or arrangements aren't made to pick them up.

The LW doesn't have any duty to keep these items.  But it would be a kindness to send another notice with pics, jic there is something the friend wants and forgot about.
