This is a weird weird hobby

Dear Prudence,

For reasons I can’t fully articulate, I enjoy writing fake Reddit posts as a creative outlet. I am a prolific poster. I concoct outlandish but plausible situations to post in “AITA” and similar subreddits. Sometimes I take details from real life as inspiration, but in general everything is completely fabricated. Recently, my boyfriend found my Reddit account and read all my posts. Crap.

He was understandably upset—based on my post history, it looks like I’ve cheated on him with dozens of people, had a life of crime, lied about my identity, you name it. But it’s all fake, and just something I do for fun. I tried to explain my weird hobby to him, but because there are a few snippets of real life in there, he refuses to believe me. How can I prove to him that I’ve always been faithful and the posts are all false?

  • I don’t know if you can. But get yourself a Netflix account or a better hobby or something

  • You're a jerk.  It's both frustrating to know that you're dating someone who makes up stories but also, you're misleading people for fun.

You may be able to convince him you're not lying but you likely won't be able to convince him that you're a good person.
  • As someone who enjoys AITA posts, this is so annoying.

  • I have a friend who is an professional troll.  She's banned from Reddit.  I didn't even know that could happen, like the entirety of Reddit (usually you're just banned from a specific sub-Reddit).  She showed me: when she tries to log-in, a banner pops across saying this account is banned from Reddit, any accounts made from the same user is banned, and cannot post.  I honestly think it's weird AF, but it's her jam.  She's not faking anything, so it's a little different.  I don't think there's anything wrong with the hobby, but there are consequences to this particular hobby.  Either deal with them or stop doing it.

The relationship now might no be salvageable.  I think you're going to have to, at a minimum, delete all the accounts and show that to him, until trust is restored.  No matter what, these are lessons to carry forward.
  • If LW weren’t using personal details I’d say this is a harmless albeit very weird hobby. But the minute you stay to include real details about people who can see themselves in your posts you are potentially harming them. Admit you screwed up, but they may be too hurt or weirded out to stay.
