Wedding Woes

Bereaved and Bewildered

Dear Prudence,

My mother passed away recently. We are all beside ourselves, but on the night she died, I found out something I wish I hadn’t.

She was sharing very intimate texts with two people outside of her marriage: one was a close friend of the family, and one was someone I’d never heard of before. Obviously, I’m horrified. My mom and dad’s marriage wasn’t perfect; they were awful to each other in all sorts of ways, but it just feels so gross to me to know she was sending messages like that to other men, especially someone close to both her and my dad. The texts weren’t sexual in nature, but they were beyond mere friendship. It was obvious both men had romantic feelings for my mother, and it seems like she reciprocated, on some level.

My dad knows, and he’s very upset. He won’t talk to us about it, despite my efforts to make sure he knows I am always open to it. Alongside coping with our loss, how do I come to terms with the fact that my mother was unfaithful? And how do I support my father, her husband of 21 years, through the revelation?

  • Awful to each other is not a good or even mediocre marriage. It's really not that surprising that your mother was talking to other men. For all you know, she may have been planning a divorce. You accept that your mother was a human and did things that humans do.

Your father is not your responsibility. If he's upset or wants to talk about that, he should be seeking out counselling or friends, not his children.
  • I am assuming that the marriage and birth of the LW are likely somewhat close-ish meaning that they're possibly late teens to mid 20s.  At this point this is likely not for them to navigate.  And I find it suspicious if all of this is happening with Dad none the wiser.

I'm really more inclined to think that their marriage wasn't great at all but this was a known secret and on her deathbed it came out.

You can not love their marriage or even that Mom had other relationships while still mourning her.  Her loss is a loss for all of you.  Mourn the loss of her presence and know she was a human who may have made choices you think you'd make differently but also as a child there's likely a lot of living to do while you write and judge.

Exactly. LW, go to therapy to process your feelings about what you've learned about your mom, and let your father handle his feelings however he sees fit. You cannot fix this for him and shouldn't try, so stop offering.

The timing really is terrible because you'll only ever have one side of the story.  Mom is no longer here to share her side, so it's all from Dad's pov.  I recommend counseling to work through the grief and the confusion on top of it.
Props to the Dad for not talking about their marriage problems with LW.
