New York

Dear........

Dear the rest of the world,

Contrary to popular belief, "NEW YORK CITY" is a city and "NEW YORK" is a state....

and "Central New York" does NOT = the area near Central Park

Buy a freaking map.

Whenever I'd go somewhere out of town and people asked where I was from and I answered 'New York' they always asked me How's the city?  So I've since learned to say Upstate central New York or New York state.

PS I wish I had a 'like' button for this.

This also  applies to almost every wedding resource divided by "region." Everything is for the greater New York City area! At best, they'll cover Albany. Grr!

I have also told people I'm from Rochester, New York and still gotten the "how's the big city?" question. I think they think Rochester is a neighborhood in NYC or something...

This is SOOOOO true, especially when you travel overseas.  Everytime I'd say I was from New York, people would get all excited and ask questions about the city.  Every. Single. Time.

When people ask me about the city, I just tell them I haven't been there in a few years. Then I get these "WTF?" looks that amuse me to no end.

Not too long ago my friend I met studying abroad who lives in Portland, OR came to visit a friend in D.C. and called me to meet her in NYC for a day trip. I was all "WTF, have you met a map, honey?" Okay maybe I didn't say it that harshly, but still, it's 6 hours away! D.C. is actually closer, although still over 4 hours away.

As someone who lived in NYC for years, I actually never experienced this.  When asked where I was from when I was elsewhere, I also answered "New York."  And then they always asked me where!  Since I moved to Ithaca, no one has really asked.  :-)
