Menu Ideas

Hi all,

So we are doing our tasting/rental selection with the caterer in a couple weeks and Im having trouble deciding what to do for the food for cocktail hr. What have been your best/worst experiences with cocktail hr food at weddings your own or ones you have been too. I was sent 18pages of options and I dont know what is the best choices. Is it better to just do some platters like fruit/veg/cheese...or do a platter and then some hot appetizers?

I say do a platter and some hot appetizers. You don't want your guests getting drunk because their tummies are empty!

The best coctail hour station that I've been to so far was a mashed potato bar, that served a choice of butter mashed, garlic mashed, or sweet potato mashed, with topping options of bacon, sour cream, chives, cheese, lobster chunks, and shrimp. They were served in martini glasses with forks and were AMAZING!!! If that is one of your options then I highly reccommend doing it!

I can't think of a best or worst item, but I do remember that I strongly prefer apps that do not require plates and utensils. As a guest, I have a drink in one hand and my purse in the other, so I don't have a 3rd hand free to hold a plate, or a 4th hand free to hold a fork, too. Finger foods are best, and having them passed on trays so that I can just grab one at a time is even better. Otherwise you'll find me hovering near the food table.

[QUOTE]18 pages of options? Holy cow. I'd have a hard time picking too. We had a cheese and fruit platter, veggie potstickers and jalapeno cheddar fried shrimp. I think the apps also depend on what you're doing for dinner. If you're doing chicken, beef and fish for dinner, I'd try to have different items as apps. Or if you're having a pasta as an entree, I'd skip a pasta style app. If that makes any sense. In my dream world, we would have had a fruit and cheese platter with a wider variety of each, mini grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup in shot glasses, a mashed potato bar, mini crab cakes, and probably a bruschetta. As long as you have a somewhat even amount of hot and cold apps, you'll be fine.

I was at a wedding that had these as a late night snack and it was AMAZING!
