Chips & Salsa Bar?

What would you think if you went to a wedding that offered a chips and salsa bar as the hor d'oeuvres? Does that seem really stupid? We'd do a bunch of different kinds of salsa and chips, including some really mild ones and some hot ones, and fruit salsa w/ cinnamon chips. We're doing BBQ for our main meal, so I'd like to keep the hor d'oeuvres pretty simple...

    I think that unless it's going to be a formal wedding, that would be fine and yummy ;)

    It sounds delicious, BUT it might be too messy.

    ETA: But not as messy as BBQ, which you're already doing.  So, I say go for it :) (BTW, BBQ is my favorite food in the world and I so wish we were doing it for our reception).

    That would be AWESOME. I love chips and salsa.

    But do individual servings/tiny dishes, since it can be messy.

    As long as there's ample seating and tables. Nothing like trying to juggle a plate full of chips and salsa, your beverage, purse, coat, etc, etc, etc with nowhere to sit and set your stuff down.

    I'd be afraid to spill it on myself and would probably only eat the chips.  Or quac if there was some because it's sturdier than salsa.  It sounds delicious though.

    Sounds good. I will say this though, salsa followed immediately by barbecue would do a fine number on my tummy. (Sorry for the TMI)

    A major downside of this is the abundance of crumbs that will be covering tables, the floor and people's clothing.

    Give some details about your vision for this, from what the venue is like to the style and level of formality of your wedding.

    Kiki, it's been FI's only request thus far...since I turned down his request for pizza, I figured I had to give somewhere...and I'd much rather have some yummy, messy BBQ than rubbery wedding chicken

    BBQ and chips & salsa sounds heavenly to me.. I love salsa. Chips are just the socially acceptable mechanism to get it into my mouth.

    But then again I come from a place where chips and salsa are served at almost every restaurant, in some form or another.

    Jess, our reception is being held in the reception hall directly across from our ceremony site...I think there are pictures in my bio of both. Not black tie, but not shorts and t-shirt either, if that helps.  I'm not sure how I would set it up...either small bowls on each table, like Mary said or possibly buffett-style..but that would probably be super messy, huh?

    My nephew and his wife had chips and salsa at the cocktail hour while they took pictures.   It was great (although I don't like salsa and didn't love the onion breath on fi), not too messy (everyone was using little cocktail plates), and I didn't notice an issue with crumbs, either.

    I agree with PP, make it a nacho bar and you will have my heart forever.  I think that chips and salsa may be the perfect food.

    Yum..this sounds great.  H's cousin did this along with guac and toquitos.  Turned out great.

    Smokey, chips and salsa are by far both mine and FI's favorite snack...sometimes it's dinner. Bonus points for me if I have the time and ambition to make the salsa myself...I've done it before, and it's not hard, just time consuming.

    That sounds awesome!  I think small bowls on each table would make it more convenient (and prettier) than buffet style.

    I think buffet style would work.

    If you used something similar to this for the presentation at individual tables could work, too.

    PS: Sarahnvinny's suggestion is good, BUT, you have to be careful. There are lots of people that are allergic to avocado (like myself) so I would need things that I could prepare myself or that were avocado-free.
