*HeadDesk*

My lack of job is taking a toll on me. This is the longest I've been without work since I'm 16. I am actively searching - sending out an average of 3 to 5 resumes a day, and trying to follow up as best I can. I'm desperate here - I'm applying to jobs that aren't even in my field just because I desperately need something that pays.

I went to a staffing agency yesterday for some help and I'm praying something will come through. But right now I'm just feeling bummed out and useless

I know how much this sucks. Just hang in there and something will come along. Make sure to keep your eyes and ears open and asaking aroudn to friends. Most of my jobs have come from word of mouth or personal connections.

I totally understand, hun.  I was without work for several months after graduation and it SUCKED.  Hang in there, keep trying and keep getting your name out.  I would also recommend utilizing any and all contacts you have.  Get the word out that you're looking and hopefully someone else may know somewhere that's hiring.

    Hang in there! GL!

Hey!  I know this sucks, but it's important to remember not to take this personally.  This is nothing more than a reflection of the state of this horrible economy... well qualified, hard working people are finding it difficult to find ANYTHING, much less something that actually lives up to their potential.

Hang in there and don't give up.  You'll find something.

Ohhh I know EXACTLY how you feel.  I had always had very steady work until I moved here and I've felt completely useless not working.  It's soo stressful.  The best online site that I've found for job searching is indeed.com - they combine all the other online search engines.  Good luck and try to keep your head up - I know it's hard..

Thanks all, and thanks Paige for indeed.com ... I'm going to try that. I've been looking everywhere -- mediabistro, hotjobs, Monster, Careerbuilder, even craigslist. I job search for roughly 3-4 hours and then get frustrated, cry and play The Sims til my eyeballs bleed =/

Good Luck! Try not to get too frustrated, things work out this way for a reason. It is tough right now but be patient, the right job will come along!

And The Sims!?!? I love The Sims! Try not to play so much that you hear sim-language in your sleep, lol.

Ahahaha yay a fellow Simmer! I swear sometimes those little buggers are speaking English, that's how long I spend on this game. I play Sims Legacy Challenge too and that only works if you have tons of time to invest LOL.

Do you have a college degree with alumni in your area? For me, finding a job happened rather quickly once I reached out to alumni from my school.  I went on LinkedIn, joined my alumni network group which allows you to send messages for free to anyone in the same group (this would also work for any group that you join - so join a bunch!  Anything related to your region or your professional interest).  Just a quick email saying, "Hello, I wanted to reach out to you as I am a fellow alum of [school] and currently looking for a job in this area.  I was hoping to buy you a cup of coffee and pick your brain on the job market.  Please let me know when and where would be most convenient to meet for a few minutes.  Best regards, [name]"

If it's not an alum, but rather just similar profession, try writing, "... reach out to you as I am similarly interested in [profession/title of person you're writing to]"

This worked within 2 weeks for me - rather than bang my head against a desk in frustration for not finding a job, I made it a goal to buy coffee.  Lots and lots of coffee.  I figured for each person I met with, I'd get them to introduce me to at least 2-3 more, who I would then sit down with.  The more cups of coffee I bought, the more people I was networking with, and thus the closer I was to finding a job.

That way, even if you don't find a job right away you'll feel some level of success for having gotten these people to meet with you.

Seriously, it worked within 2 weeks.  Try it!

Huh. I've been on LinkedIn for about a year, it's never really done much for me. But I guess I should try again. There are not a lot of fellow alumni in my area, but it's still worth a shot.

Like I said, just join a bunch of groups in your geographic area and professional field and just search through to find people who are relatively interesting.  Good luck!  I hope it works as well for you as it did for me.

It probably varies by region, but there are tons of jobs posted on LinkedIn here. Sometimes they're *only* on LinkedIn and nowhere else.

Maybe keep an eye out for any sort of networking events in your area, too.
