Passport name change question

I'm a little late (okay, a LOT late) in getting my passport changed to my new name, and now that I'm ready to send in my old one I'm wondering something.

Do they give you your old passport back, or do they take it off to Passport heaven with all my sentimental country stamps, foreign visas and all? Will I never see them again?

If so, I am sad.

I'm pretty sure they send it back... I got my old one back when I had to renew mine two years ago. It was the one I had when I was under 18 so I don't know if that changes if they send it back or not...

Okay I did not even know you had to change it on your passport... How much is it?

Yes - you will get it back. You also will need to bring the original copy or a certified by the state copy of your marriage license and I can't remember how much money but it was more than i thought it should be all things considered. I got my marriage license and my old passport mailed back in separate envelopes about a week apart from eachother which flipped me out. I thought they had lost our *only* copy of our marriage certificate but all is well that ends well. All told, I ended up getting 3 envelopes from them. The first was my old passport. The second was my marriage license. The third was my new passport.

Thank you! And thanks for mentioning that you got things back in separate envelopes, because I would have freaked out if I didn't expect it. How inefficient is that of them?

Re. the cost, it's $140 if you get both the passport and the passport card. The card is $30 and I don't think you need it, but I thought I'd get it anyways (not sure why, really). But seriously, $110 just to update your NAME?! WTH?! There's also a note on the passport website (that you have to "Agree" to) saying that the passport application is non-refundable even if your passport does not get processed as a result. Double WTH.

I haven't had to do this yet, but I believe they send things in separate envelopes to prevent theft/identity theft. Banks do it all the time when they send out debit cards. Your card comes in a seperate envelope and on a separate day than your pin does.

They probably send the three separate so in the case that someone were to steal your mail or something like that, you've only lost one very important document instead of three.

Wow I can't beleive it costs that just to change your name on the passport!!! That is literally the cost of a whole new one - Crazy!

Yeah I hate how much passports cost---I'm bummed because I JUST got mine renewed in '09, so it doesn't expire until 2019. So really I paid $100 for a passport that is only gonna last me 2 years before it needs to get renewed, lame! If only I had known at the time..

I had to look into this too. My biggest question is-I need a passport period. Do I get my passport in my maiden name since we're taking our honeymoon the day after our wedding or do I get it in my married name? I believe I'm supposed to get it in my maiden name since it will still match my plane ticket and DL then and get the name changed on it once we're back? Does anyone know if this is correct?

Yep, you will need to get it in your maiden name because that is what all of your other paperwork will say.

Also, like Steph mentioned, you should be able to get a name change on it if you purchased it in the last year.
