Invitations - check, rant, and question

My invites are all done and assembled!!  I went to the post office yesterday to get stamps only to be told my invitations are less than half a millimeter too thick (I swear they were just punishing me because my calligrapher wrote out state names rather than using the abbreviation - for the record, I asked her to use abbreviations to make the post office happy...) so they'll be 81 cents which means I have super cool dolphin and big horned sheep on each envelope - really not a big deal but the whole invitation process has made me feel like this:

So my question is - to those who hand cancelled, was it worth it?  Do you think it made a difference?  I'm not stoked about hand stamping 135 envelopes BUT if it kept your envelopes in better condition I'm totally willing to do it.

I don't have any advice, but that video is really funny!

oh, I do actually have advice - try another post office.  Sometimes if you get a different person they'll give you a different answer (I've heard of that happening on here) or they'll just be nicer/more helpful.  Don't know which one you went to, but sometimes the smaller, less crowded ones are less stressed out.  This doesn't apply obviously if you want to hand cancel.  I looked into it and just got so confused about where I could go I gave up.  I think they all made it to their destinations ok though.

I second trying another post office.  And, in my opinion, I wouldn't ask in the first place.  If you ask, they can say no.  If you buy regular stamps and send them, they won't return them for 1/2 millimeter, IMO.

When I took my invitation to the post office to have them weigh it, they told me that it was right at 1 oz, and that the STAMP would likely put it over the limit. So instead of .44 postage I sprung for .61 stamps. They told me that the invitations wouldn't be sent back to me if they were overweight - they would be delivered to guests "postage due." I would have been mortified if that had happened, so I didn't chance it.

That sounds like a lot of BS to me. It COULD have, but the weight of a stamp is so miniscule that I don't even think it adds 0.01 and hence, wouldn't be noticed in weight. I would have put a stamp on one to someone who wouldn't care and made them re-weigh it. Then if it actually did put it over, that one would have a few extra stamps to make up the balance and you could put 61cents on the rest. I know that doesn't help you now, but if anyone else reading this has the same thing happen.
