revamped atkins?

I searched for this, but I couldn't find anything.

Has anyone tried the re-vamped Atkins diet? My FMIL had gotten Woman's World or Women's Day (don't know exactly which) that had this in it. I have over two years to lose, but at the same time I'm not comfortabe in my own body anymore. I'm 180.5 and 5 feet 3 inches. I feel the best at between 109-121. but my FMIL said I'd be too thin at that, FI said I wouldn't be. Either way I really need to lose weight, just wondering if anyone tried it.

Re: revamped atkins?

  • I have and don't recommend it.

Recently I've been looking for a strict (temporary) eating plan to help me break through a plateau.  I have a gluten problem so lower carb usually works well for me when it comes to menu planning.  I compared a few plans and the South Beach Diet really seems to be a better idea than Atkins.  You get your carbs from veggies and such since there are no bread, pasta, rice, added sugars, or potatoes allowed during the first 2 week detox period.

    Good Luck!

Yeah, Atkins is not a very good plan.  It's far too restrictive.  In moderation, carbs are actually quite good for you, and essential to body and brain function.

I agree with Anna that if you want to follow a "diet" South Beach is a better choice than Atkins.  However, a "diet" like that isn't necessary at all.  You can just as easily lose weight by counting your calories, ditching as many processed foods as possible, eating lots of fruits and veggies (CARBS!  Oh noes!), lean protein, and whole grains if you choose to eat grains.  Add in some exercise when you're ready, and you should be more than good to go in 2 years.  Not just to look and feel great on your wedding day, but to be healthy for life.

ETA: Ok, that last sentence sounded super cheesey and infomercial-like.  Ha!  But it's true.  Try to make a lifestyle change--NOT go on a diet.

  • Thank You for your opionions. I did forget to mention that I do have Celiac Disease and also a slight problem with dairy.

  • Anna and I feel your pain.  But there are carbs in veggies and fruits and rice and other things you CAN (and should) eat.  So it sounds like a lower carb plan will work well for you with your restrictions--but I would not cut them out to the point that Atkins does.

Also, it sounds like you'd be an ideal candidate to try Paleo (no grains, dairy, or refined sugar) or Primal (no grains, and I don't think any refined sugar, but can eat dairy in moderation).  I don't normally recommend those because I'm pretty against cutting out total food groups with no medical reason, but they do seem to work really well for people, and you DO have a medical reason.

That's why I'm digging the S. Beach plan.  It's lower carb but not low carb.  i just won't be getting the huge carb load from things like white rice and all those evil bread products that tempt me daily to ignore my gluten problem  :)  Oh i'll still be getting carbs!  I'm a veggie eating fanatic and it encourages eating as many veggies as I can handle.  Yum!

Normally i'm anti formal diet plan, but I think it might be just what i need to jumpstart my healthy diet back into weight loss mode.  Stupid plateau.

The other ladies gave you excellent advice. I have no experience with this diet at all, but I just wanted to touch on the fact that you shouldnt listen to your FMIL or FI. Lose weight for yourself, and end up in an area YOU are comfortable in, not what other people think you should be. I am the same height as you are, and I personally feel my best around 120-125. Good luck!

  • @ J&K I've never heard about the two you mentioned, but I'll definitely check them out.

@ Anna I'll be checking out South Beach as well.

My problem right now is that, my FI and I are living with his parents. I live with my gram usually but we were affected by the flood in September. So right now my eating choices are those that FMIL makes.

@sparkles Thank You for your encouraging words. You are right! I need to feel comfortable for me, not anyone else.

  • I'm glad I came across this.  I've been looking to get into either Atkins or South Beach for my fiance and I... as we've both kind of gotten into the fat and happy stage of our relationship.  With everyone's advice here, I think I'm going to go with South Beach.  Plus, Courtney Thorne-Smith looks absolutely skeletal in those new Atkins commercials!

  • The problem with the new Atkins is that they want to make money off of you by selling you their pre-packaged smoothies and granola bars. These foods may be low in carbs and high in protein, but they are also full of preservatives and other trash that shouldn't be in your body.

I also recommend trying to lean more towards the Paleo lifestyle. I eat Paleo most days, but if I could never have grains again I would probably die.

    GL! :)
