Maui Reception

Hello, I am new to the boards but have been reading through posts for awhile now.

We are planning our wedding in Maui for August next year. I think there will be about 35 people.

At the moment I am a little torn about reception venues/restaurants. I would prefer it at a restaurant since I don't really want the hassle of renting chairs/tables/etc. And it seems like the venue cost plus catering cost actually works out quite expensive. But I would like somewhere that offers a private dining room/area.

I am seriously consdering Spago at the Four Seasons right now. They have a banquet drink option (all you can drink from a set drink menu for x many hours per person) so this seems like it gives us control over the bar tab. But I don't know what their private dining room is like, since I haven't seen and can't find any pictures. Has anybody held their reception dinner there? Also are there any hidden costs that you didn't anticipate?

I"m also considering Gannon's since we could do our ceremony and reception there.

But basically I am open to ideas, but my main fear is a spiralling bar tab!

Re: Maui Reception

  • I'm a big fan of Mala at the Marriott Wailea. They have a nice outdoor balcony where they can seat a good number of people.  I don't think they'll fit 35 in the Buddha Room.  We hosted welcome cocktails for 40 people at Mala, and our bar tab wasn't *too* bad despite everyone being drunk.  They gave us a discount on a few signature drinks, but we did keep the bar open for everything.  Whitney (their event coordinator) was really awesome to work with.

I also don't recall anyone being disappointed with Gannon's on this board.  Merrirman's is also popular but I don't know about their liquor pricing options.  I think most hotels will allow an all inclusive bar tab, but not the restaurants.  It also depends on knowing your guests -- sometimes, all inclusive isn't nearly as good of a deal if people aren't big drinkers.

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

I looked at the Mala and it was originally my first choice, but it only holds 32 guests for private dining and our guest list has grown. Since posting it looks like we are having more like 40 guests, so I don't think it's going to work out.

My fiance's friends are big drinkers and can put quite a bit of booze away, especially beer!
  • Just a thought..if you have your wedding at a private venue, you can bring in all your own alcohol!  That's what we are doing- getting married at Olowalu...it's certainly not cheap, but I'm happy that we will have a private venue to ourselves.  Our caterer- Food For the Soul- includes all rentals in their catering prices.  Our wedding is about the same size as yours, just about 40 people.
There still is Merriman's, I think you can have a little more variety with your group size.  There are just minimum food and beverage buyouts.
Hope everything works out for you!  Good luck!
  • We had ours at the Five Palms in Kihei.  We had 31 people and it was perfect.  Check them out....food/service/atmosphere/etc was all amazing!
