Peru(machu-pichu)/Anguilla OR Italy-Amalfi Coast, Rome, Venice etc.

Planning a 2 week trip in late July or early August with a 10K budget-leaving from NYC. Please shed some thoughts on the above honeymoon ideas. Much appreciated :)

Re: Peru(machu-pichu)/Anguilla OR Italy-Amalfi Coast, Rome, Venice etc.

  • If it was my HM, I would pick Italy because I would love to go there.  Just know that it will be hot as heck in Italy during the time of year you stated.

Anguilla, you are looking at hurricane season, but the chances one will come through during your HM is slim, but it is still a possibility...so if you go there remember to get travel insurance.

  • actually i would save italy and go on the off season. not only will it be hot and peak season (aka crowded as hell and super expensive) but you'll save probably half doing on the off season-meaning late sept through april.

i'm not sure what peru is like that time of year.

if it were me i'd probably do a few days in anguilla in july and then go to italy in october.

  • Those choices are so completely different. I think you need to decide what you really want out of a HM- relaxation, adventure, or big city exploration? I agree with pps, though- Italy would be too hot! Anguilla sounds great. I was there a few years ago and the beaches were stunning!

we arent doing an italian honeymood for the same reasons pp said.  we are going in september when it starts to kind of calm down and cool down, but still its o much money and so hot and sho crowded i just dont want to spend top dollar to not get everthing possible out of it.

we almost went to peru! big debates here between peru and thailand (ended up on thailand) but i would so love to go there! havent been myself but its one of my dreams! good luck choosing! from what i understand too 10k will get you a lot further in Peru than in Italy.  We chose thailand because once we get there, everything is really really cheap so we can splurge and do whatever we want regardless of budget really, where in italy we would need to watch it a bit more.

    good luck!

That's a good budget to really have a nice Italy trip, with all the places you mentioned.  I would wait until Ocotber though because it will be hot and SUPER crowded.  We go to Italy every year and LOVE it.  I didn't think it would be possible for me not to enjoy Florence (my favorite-est!) until I experienced it in the summer--ugh!  So many people.  We've been there in late October and November and had whole streets and monuments to ourselves.  Much more relaxing and pleasant.

If you want a beachy component to the HM, maybe do Angulilla in the summer as a minimoon, then save Italy for later on.  In general, though, if it were me and I was splurging and could only go on 1 of these trips, Anguilla would be at the bottom of my list just because it's accessible enough to go any other time.

Peru would be interesting to me, for a honeymoon but August is the coolest and rainiest month of the year.  I've read there can be as many as 20 rainy days out of the month.

I loved Peru (we went last summer, NOT for our HM), but it all depends on what you want from a HM.  If you love archeology museums and hiking and Peruvian food, then Peru is awesome.  But if you want to lounge on a beach and drink mixed drinks with little umbrellas in them, Peru is probably not your place.  Also, it's not always the easiest traveling.  Poor H got food poisoning and altitude sickness and was just miserable for a good chunk of the trip.  If you can go in July, the weather in Cuzco and MP should be fine.  10K is a very doable budget for a great trip including the option to stay on the ruins and take the Hiram Bingham train over.
  • Thank you all so much for responses. I was getting more set on Italy for HM, and Peru another time with friends. We are pretty much open to travel anywhere, the problem is we cannot decide where. August travel is not that easy to plan, since some spots are not in season. Would prefer to leave sometime in August, so I need to re-think Italy based on the comments.

Love to travel,, but never had such a hard time deciding on a trip destination :)
