Question for anyone who has ever been a BM?

I have started to look for dresses for my bridesmaids and would like to find a designer and a color that I like, then let them choose their dress. I'm thinking either brown or a deep red since it will be a fall wedding. Have you ever worn a dress as a bridesmaid that you really liked? Who was the designer?

TIA!

Re: Question for anyone who has ever been a BM?

  • B2 has nice well made dress that aren't too expensive.  I also really like Alfred Angelo.
  • I would go through alfred angelo... the offer a great selection of dresses in 55 colors.

This way you get the color you want and then they can choose which ever style they feel most comfortable in. (in affordable prices too.)

Plus I was happy with the quality of the bridesmaid dresses at Alfred Angelo...

wow... I feel like a commercial. lol.

    Good Luck!
  • honestly, I don't have a dress that I've worn as a BM that Ive really liked. one, I would like to cut the bodice off and just wear the skirt, but that's it.

you can go through David's Bridal, Alfred Angelo or J. Crew. I like dresses from all 3, but J. Crew tends to have dresses that are more wearable after the fact. did you ask your BMs their budget?

  • I agree that Alfred Angelo has some great dresses.  For my sister's wedding we wore Alferd Angelo in a mocha for a fall wedding and I wore the same dress that winter for my work formal.  They will be on the top of my list for my BMs.
  • I wore an Ann Taylor "Celebrations" dress (the former name of their current "Weddings and Parties" line) dress to a wedding as a guest and liked it a lot, so that was the first place I looked for my own bridesmaids' dresses. My two BMs had their choice between three different styles in the same length/fabric/color.

  • My BMs love the ones they are wearing, they are from Aria (www.ariadress.com).  There are lots of different styles, and *all* the dresses are the same price (eg- all knee length silk shantung are $200, all knee length satin are $165, etc).

The one I wore for my bffs over the summer was a floor length barijay.  It was fine, my problem was more big boobs and a strapless with not-so-great boning than the dress itself.

  • I've worn Jim Hjelm BM dresses twice and really liked both, but they are on the pricier side (a little more than $200 b/f any alterations). I like the J Crew ones but they aren't really cheap either. I really like the idea of letting everyone pick their own style-- we did that in my sister's wedding and I will be doing it in mine. That way even if someone is unhappy with their dress it is their own fault.

I've tried on Belsoie (sp? same designer as B2) that I really liked but they didn't have the right shade of pink. Dessy/After 6 have tons of options and are pretty cheap, but didn't fit well on me.
  • My bridesmaids wore aria dresses and I thought they looked great, good quality, came in fast - everyone had a different style - and they were happy with them, or at least told me so!  I've been a bridesmaid twice and never wore either dress again, but also haven't gone to too many formal events since those weddings, either.  I will also echo the suggestion to look at jcrew and ann taylor - they seem to have a more limited color selection than david's bridal or alfred angelo, for example, but have details and styles that are less 'bridesmaid-y" than other lines.

  • Ditto regarding Bill Levkoff! I have worn so many of his dresses in other weddings & they were always the most comfortable, durable & cost effective dresses!

Was not a fan of Jim Helm BM dresses.

  • My bridesmaids all wore Watters or Wtoo dresses.  They each got to pick out their dresses and I think they each loved theirs...I also loved each of theirs!

  • I would say Alfred Angelo as well. I wore a beautiful eggplant strapless dress for my friend's wedding. I loved it. I even wore it again to a relative's wedding.
