Belize?

FI & I are thinking about possibly going to an all-inclusive resort in Belize, but we don't know anyone who has been there. So, do any of you know anyone with Belize experience? Do you recommend going? Any places we should avoid if we do go there?

TIA!!

Re: Belize?

  • I've only been to Ambergis Caye.  I didn't care for the beaches.  Lot of sea grass in the water and on the beach....I didn't go in the water from the shore once.
  • I'm not aware of any AIs in Belize. Not every Caribbean or Central American destination has them I, like the pp, have been to Ambergris and thought the same of the water. Placenia is supposed to be better in that regard, but still no AIs.

  • I have been to Belize-Ambergris has crappy beaches. Great snorkeling, but the beaches are covered in run off from the reef. Placencia has nicer beaches.

We spent 5 days out in the Cayo and it was the best travel experience I have ever had. Our lodge offered a reasonable meal plan so all the food was taken care of, and offered a lot of excursions, activities, etc. We went to Guatamala to Tikal, and to Actun Tunich Miknal. You miss so much if you only go out to the Cayes, there is so much to see and do inland!

  • Thanks for the tips, ladies. We actually are probably going to avoid the beaches, since my FI and I have decided we would both get a little tired of laying on the beach for more than a day. So I was thinking of something more inland, going on hikes, touring the jungle, temples, etc.
  • We did a cruise for our HM (that actually did stop in Belize).  However, prior to that, we had looked into staying at an AI in Belize.  We came across this resort: http://www.cocoplumcay.com/belize_all_inclusive.htm.  I know absolutely nothing about it, but we did seriously consider it before we determined we could not afford it.

  • We originally were planning our honeymoon for Belize - specifically staying at the Caves Branch Lodge in their treehouses until FI's dad offered us hotel points and we have to pick somewhere where there was a Sheraton. Lol But it looks amazing! You should look into there.

We went to Belize for our honeymoon and stayed at the Maruba jungle Spa which is about an hour north of Belize City.  It was an amazing trip!  The people there were wonderful and we had lots of great day excursions to Mayan Ruins and boat trips to the carribean to snorkel (we saw dolphins!!...see pic for fins....we unfortunately did not get the camera out soon enouph but they were amazing)

(and visits to the islands (key Caulker & San Pedro)!  The resort has two swimming pools, great food, a wonderful Japanese mineral bath and very unique room (huts) to enjoy your stay in.

Keep in mind that Belize is a third world country and the resort is not like going to Cancun or anything.  You are in the jungle and there are masquitos and bugs.  If you want something different, this is an excellent place to explore!!

Recommendations to Pack: matches (for the citranella candle), citranella candle (they do provide a new coil to burn every night but it is nice to have your own), bug rapellent wipes or lotion

    Have fun!!!

  • Check out Hidden Valley Inn!! They're so great and in such an awesome location inland to explore ruins since it's relatively close to Guatemala. They have packages too that are "all-inclusive", but understand that prices inland for food and drinks are high simply because you're in a remote location.

I went to Hidden Valley and took a day trip to the ATM Caves and Caracol. We drove ourselves, but hooked up with the British Envoy to drive to Caracol. The owers and reservation desk is awesome at Hidden Valley and can help you out.

We spent a night in the Tikal park. Note: Don't drive to Tikal on your own. Tikal is absolutely amazing at sunrise and sunset, it would be such a waste if you just went out there and missed either! The hotels in the park aren't much but it's definitely worth looking into for one night!

We flew into BZE, drove to Hidden Valley for 4 nights (see renting the private waterfalls!), spent one night in Tikal, flew back to BZE-to-Ambergris. I agree that Ambergris isn't ideal if you're into large spans of white sandy beaches, but I loved it for a couple nights. The downtown area is lively and a nice change from the remoteness of the rest of the trip, and the water is gorgeous. Plus it has some of the best diving and snorkeling in the world. Placencia is also great, but less hotel options.
  • We have also been considering a honeymoon to belize i have been checking out an all inclusive package through almond beach Belize there is a jungle and beach package that sounds like a good deal. Three days at sleeping giant jungle resort then four days at almond beach resort. Both seem to have good trips and activities to choose from as well.
  • We stayed at Almond Beach a few years ago and loved it.  We're going back for our anniversary this year and trying to decide if we should stay there or try something different.
I've heard great things about Hamanasi too.

  • I'm looking into the Ka'ana resort for my destination wedding, it looks amazing and so much to do! I would Definitely recommend looking into it, here's the link!
