How far in advance?

My wedding is in Sept and I am doing my research on photographers, djs, ect.  I just wondered how far in advance I should be booking vendors.  My wedding is on a Thursday, so I don't think I will have to worry too much about them being booked up.  I am thinking the sooner the better...

I am September too and I have been booking people now. It's never too early...esp. if you have people you know you want. Just get it out of the way now.

I'd do it asap: 1) feels good to get things done  2) some vendors limit how many weddings they do in a weekend, so even though you are on a thursday if they are already booked friday, saturday, and or sunday, they or you may not want to make the thursday happen (I've heard soome photographers sometimes only take a certain number per weekend for example) 3) September will be here before you know it.  The quicker you get the major things done, the more time you'll have for all the small but time consuming details.
  • Thanks for the replies.  I am definitely getting a lot of info from friends who have recently gotten married.  I feel like word of mouth is the best way, if someone had a good experience, that definitely makes me feel comfortable using them, too.

I am going to make a few phone calls tomorrow.  Also, in just a few weeks my two best friends are flying up here to go dress shopping and go to the big expo in Providence.  That will be a great time to start really making plans!
  • Expos are a great way to meet vendors, get a vibe from them, and compare a lot of people and their work, prices, etc.  Also a lot of vendors will give discounts when booked at an expo, so come ready and maybe with a check or 2!

  • I agree the expo in January is probably a good time to book most people, if you already have an idea.
PLus the earlier you book the more time you have to pay it off!

I'm getting married in April 2013 and I already have a venue, photographer, dj and caterer booked! So it's never too early....although I have gotten some surprised responses from vendors when I told them how far out my wedding is.

  • I am getting married in July and IMO the earlier the better that way you get a better rate and you get to check it off your list. I booked my DJ a year and a half out, but he is very popular and his dates go rather quickly. I booked my Photographer last year also and I got locked into the 2010 rates. But like PP suggested, expos are a good chance to meet vendors although some of the expos are a bit busy.

    Goodluck! :)
