Appropriate dress for outdoor wedding

I'm having a casual wedding in a vineyard outside the DFW area next September. I know its going to be hot and i'm at a total loss for what kind of dress to wear. I want to look like a bride and not overheat at the same time. Any Ideas.

Re: Appropriate dress for outdoor wedding

  • What have you looked at?  Have you tried any dresses on?  Have you looked for the particular style you're looking for?  Have you looked at J.Crew?  They have some nice options.
  • I think the line of dresses you are looking for would be what is called in the industry "destination wedding dresses". They tend to be made for hotter climates, are a bit less "bride-y", and in lighter weight fabrics.

I got a dress at a sample sale and after picking it up, found it on the manufacturer's website under "destination wedding dresses". Just google that and keep looking until you find something.

My recommendation then would be to have it cut a bit shorter in front, maybe tea length, then shoe length in the back so you are cooler. That would also be a less formal look.

    Good luck.
  • Pay close attention to the type of material is the big thing. You want a lighter silk such a chiffon or a lightweight taffeta over a jacquard. If your heart isn't set on along train, have a non-existent or short train will help as well. No extra fabric to carry around and bustle.
  • I second searching for "destination" wedding dresses and looking at J Crew's line.  Also, take a look at the wedding sections on the department store sites (Bloomingdales, Nordstrom's, etc).  They have more casual options without bustles and trains.

  • Thanks everyone!
I've only tried on a few dresses at small boutiques, noting special yet. I love the cotton idea and the destination wedding suggestions. all of your posts were very helpful :)
  • I am wearing a short dress.. figured a long dress would be hot. Just ordered a few from DB online. Hopefully one will fit!
  • I am wearing a lightweight dress from essence of austrailia...love love love the dress so light weight and airy...make sure no tule or big fluffy stuff under. Maggie sottero has some nice stuff too! I think they still look bridal just not as traditional and no princess dresses mine is long but light weight and airy.
  • I'm having 2 dresses, 1 for the ceremony, pictures and the first dance and the other for the rest of the reception. It's going to be a pain changing the dresses but I fell in love with the ceremony dress, so my friends decided to chip in and help out with the second dress so I can be comfortable!

  • Personally, I say go try some dresses on and get the one that you fall in love with. You may not love the way that a destination dress looks on you. I'm only saying this because I'm having an outdoor wedding in July and had all intentions of a lovely, simple, slim fitting dress and I fell in love with the opposite when I tried dresses on.  I ended up walking out with a pickup gown with a 5 foot train lol. I'll suck it up for the 6 hours!

  • If you're a bit adventurous, consider going retro. My dress is a tea length cotton dotted swiss strapless dress that's cinched at the waist and has crinoline underneath for the "poof" affect on the skirt. It's very 50's, but with the right accessories (read: gorgeous pumps, modern hair, anything BUT a bird cage veil) can feel extremely modern and chic. I got mine because we're having an outdoor ceremony in October, but knowing Texas weather it will still be 90 degrees. Good luck!
