Luau?

Are there any luaus on the south side of Maui? I keep reading great reviews on the Old Lahaina Luau, but we want to do it the night we arrive as a "welcome dinner" kind of thing and everyone's staying on the south side.

If you've been to one of these I'd love to hear a review. If you also think the Lahaina Luau is worth the drive/distance, tell me that too :P

There is one at the former Maui Prince hotel just past Wailea...sorry cannot remember the new name of the hotel...my parents went just for the show and they really enjoyed it.  We'll be going to the OLL this time...everything i've heard has been positive even with the lack of a fire dancer...if you are foodies there is also the feast at lele in Lahaina as well...i think the same people that do the OLL put this one on too.  HTH! J. :-)

We are actually staying at the Makena Beach & Golf Resort (former prince hotel) but they said the Luau is seasonal and they aren't sure what dates it will be back.

I've read that there's one at the Grand Wailea and one at the Wailea Marriott. Has anyone heard anything about either of these?

Hi girls!  The luau at the Marriott has moved to Grand Wailea.  It's called the Honua'ula Luau.

So it's the same one.  :)  Shows are on Mondays, Thursday, Fridays, and Saturdays only.  There's limited Premium/VIP seating available (which are tables closest to the stage).  Standard seating looked fine too.

We were also staying on the South side and wanted something closer, rather than driving all the way to the Old Lahaina Luau.  We had our rehearsal dinner with premium seating at the Honua'ula Luau.  All of our guests thought the luau and food were AMAZING.  In fact, it was one of the highlights of our entire trip.

I haven't been to the Old Lahaina Luau, but I've heard it's the most "authentic" and historical luau...it's mostly hula performances throughout.  However, for our group (many of whom have low attention span), the Honua'ula fit the bill perfectly!  It has a wide variety of performances and a champion fire knife dancer as the grand finale (fire knife dancing is Samoan, so not included in the OLL).

The food and unlimited drinks were great.  Not to mention it's located on the Grand Wailea grounds, which are beautiful in itself!  You get a shell lei from the luau, which gets you free VIP parking.  Our guests loved walking around the resort after the luau, taking photos, etc.  The Wailea sunset view is beautiful and the chances of good weather are higher than the West side.

An inside tip - get a group discount!!  Booking through the luau directly, the company issues group discounts for standard seating only, but we wanted premium seating.  This was possible by booking through an agent.  Contact Heather Regidor at Fantasy Islands Activities & Tours (e-mail:  mauitours@yahoo.com).  Tell her that Sue recommended you (she cut me a very good deal for a group of 18 adults - I'm not affiliated with her in any way!).  I absolutely LOVED the luau...plus they made a congratulatory message announcement to FI and I at the beginning, which was cute.  :)  Hope this helps!

OLL is the best.  I haven't gone to any of the other luaus, but I've had friends who have.  They all thought they were a waste of their money and wished they'd just gone to OLL, again.

We sent our families to the one fabutan posted at the Marriott/GW. They said it was really good....great food, an afternoon of entertainment including things like local crafts, etc. It was like 4-8pm or something. DH and I didnt go because we still had errands to run and we hate luaus, but honestly we were really surprised by how much our families enjoyed it. OLL apparently no longer has a fire dance in the show, but then GW one does...not sure how much that matters.

Thanks for the recommendations! I think we're going to try the Grand Wailea one. Our hotel staff even recommended it. After 14 hours of flying I doubt we'll be up for the possibly 2 hour round trip to Lahaina. Grand Wailea is also a central location for all of us since we're staying at various hotels in Kihei/Makena.
