NWR: Shopping for a new car

FI and I are thinking about getting my a new (and bigger) car. We are looking for a somewhat smaller SUV/Crossover that is AWD with decent gas mileage. We have narrowed it down to  2 options (but aren't against considering others) The Nissan Rogue and the Kia Sportage. Does anyone have any opinions on either of these or know someone who drives one? We are completely stuck as to which to chose!
TIA

  • I don't know much of the cars you listed above but if your up to suggestions, I just purchased a 2013 jeep grand Cherokee SUV and I love love it! the mileage isn't to bad with 22 miles to the gallon, is very smooth and very roomy! its so much more secure and safe versus the small lexus I had before! I would reccomend the jeep to anyone looking for a reliable SUV.

  • Personally I was in the same boat you were... I kinda felt that the Kia Sportage was way over priced for what it was... Also although Kia has some decent cars I was just not comfortable buying a Kia...( I have heard horror stories about Kia lol) I loved the Nissan Rogue though... Only downside was that I couldnt find one that I met all my requirements... So I ended up getting a Honda...

  • Neither of our families are SUV people- we all have cars.  My mother is a life-long Nissan user, but she had a terrible time with her Maxima and has sworn to never buy another Nissan again.  She bought a brand new Maxima and it wouldn't start after 2 weeks- the problems only continued from there.

  • Just as an FYI, Kia and Hyundai are being sued for manipulating the numbers on their gas mileage.
  • I've heard great things about Honda and Mazda. I work at a dealership, and the only real issue I've been hearing is about the recalls they have been having with the Hondas. Nothing major, mostly the inconvenience of having to bring the car back for the neccesary repairs. Also, mazda introduced new technology this year to improve gas milage in the 3. I am not sure when or if they will be expanding it to the larger suv and crossover models, but it might be worth looking into.

  • I prefer the Kia over the Nissan. We bought a Ford Edge a few months ago and I love it! I was considering the Kia also, FSIL has the Sorento and she really likes it.

The gas mileage thing is only 2 mpg, so it's not a huge difference.

  • A friend of ours has a Rogue.  He really likes it, but it doesn't seem all that comfortable to me when riding in it.
I have a Jeep Patriot that is very practical, but we are looking to upgrade in the next 2 years to a GMC Acadia or Buick Enclave (if we find a really good deal).  I would also consider staying in the Jeep family if I could get something 4x4 with a trailer hitch and more comfortable seats.

FI's mom has the Nissan Rogue and absolutely loves everything about it.
My cousin has the Kia and she hates it.

I don't have reasons on why but yea. Sorry!

We bought the Ford Edge a few months ago too. I love it!

    I'd stear away from Kia.
