XP: Honeymoon Tips

Hi ladies!

My FI and I are planning on taking a honeymoon to Washington/Oregon in late September/early October 2012. I figured you all might be the best source of information, so I decided to ask (if you don't mind too terribly much!)

We are major travelers and have been all over the world, but for this trip, our budget is low (a wedding and FI finishing school) and we don't have much time (he's in the military, and will just be going active duty, so we won't be able to guarantee dates until a few weeks before maximum). So we decided staying in the US made the most sense, and we've always wanted to see the Pacific Northwest, so I think it will be the perfect honeymoon destination for us!

We are looking for a trip for approximately 2 weeks - we can fly into and out of either Portland or Seattle. We want to spend a minimum of 2 nights in each location, and an absolute maximum of 4-5 nights. We don't mind long drives as long as there isn't too much traffic (beautiful scenery is a plus) and we don't mind driving around a lot during the trip.

We like cute B&Bs, not too expensive (under $200/night) and with amazing breakfasts. We want to basically drive around, stay in B&Bs, go wine tasting & beer tasting, eat delicious food, go hiking, horseback riding, and maybe another adventure - hang gliding, hot air balloon, etc.

Any suggestions? Must hit sights? Great B&Bs? A suggested itinerary? Tourist traps to avoid? What are the best wineries and breweries to visit, in your experience and opinion?

Thanks in advance!!! I've cross-posted to the Washington-Seattle, Washington, & Oregon local boards, so I apologize if you frequent more than one of those!

Paradise Lodge up at Mount Rainer
Whidbey Island is mainly tourist based but is really cute my parents live out there
Bellingham is beautiful
I would think if you could fit it in hop into Canda Victoria and Vancouver are both really nice.

You should visit the Woodinville area, there are a ton of wineries there, and many tours. Here is a site that shows all the wineries: http://woodinvillewinecountry.com/
I'm not a wino, but Chateau Ste. Michelle is really popular. I'm normally a beer drinker, but I had a good time on a tasting tour for a friend's b-day. Site: http://www.ste-michelle.com/

Beer: If you want a wide selection for alright prices, go to one of these establishments in the Seattle-metro area:
Brouwers (Seattle, Fremont neighborhood) http://brouwerscafe.blogspot.com/
Taphouse (Downtown Seattle, and Bellevue- East of Seattle) http://www.taphousegrill.com/
Issaquah Brewhouse (in Issaquah, East of Seattle) It's part of Rogue breweries, which was originally based in OR. Site - http://www.rogue.com/locations/rogue-breweries.php

I'm also PMing you a HUGE list of places to eat/drink/be merry
I hope you and your FI have a great time in the great PNW!

Oooooh thanks ladies! This is a wonderful start to my research!

We're just boozers - haha, no, not really, but we are total foodies and love tasting different and awesome foods & beers & wines!

I'm a huge fan of Rogue breweries, so glad to hear they're in Seattle, too! I think this will work out to be a perfect trip for us.

I had heard that Leavenworth is very Germanic and a great place to go hiking - is it touristy, or worth a visit? Too far away (we're willing to drive 3-4 hours per day, but don't want to spend two entire days in the car)?

I haven't been to Leavenworth in a long time, but it is definitely a good place to go to for Oktoberfest. It's usually taking place the last week of September and first two weeks of October. Here's the FB page: https://www.facebook.com/oktoberfestWA

I think Leavenworth is like a 1.5 hour drive away from Seattle, so I would plan to stay there a day or two.

ETA drive time

I would suggest you stay away from whidbey for a HM. It's where we're stationed and the entire island is ALL MILITARY ALL THE TIME. Anacortes is nice but it's just not worth it. lol. Bellingham is incredible (my college town) The Crysalis is where we staye for our night-of and it was AWESOME.
Honestly, keep an eye out on livingsocial for WA. You'll find awesome ideas and deals using that so you can see it all, and save $ doing it.

uhh.. mgoss did you mean 1.5? lol levenworth is definitely not 15 hours from Seattle :P tehehehe
Calindi, IMO leavenworth isn't worth it. it's touristy, and fun to innertube but that's about it. It's nothing like Germany and incredibly small... I was expecting a full town, and it's like.. a street.
Road Dog Brew tours is the best brewery tour I've been on in Seattle. It's three hours, the guy drives you everywhere, you learn a ton, and you end up hammered... seriously... H and I had to walk Seattle and carbo load to come down off of our 11am drunk. lmfao!! The guy that does the tours is awesome too (Dustin is his name) it's his business and he's awesome!

Yea the north end of Whidbey is very military the south end is more islandy. Greenbank farms has some good wine tasting and the best pies ever.

Leavenworth is fun even if it is a bit touristy

San Juan islands are also great and Salt Spring Islands if you have the time.

Thanks guys!

I read about Road Dog tours elsewhere and we definitely plan to do that! I think we're going to do 1-2 days in Seattle, head out somewhere to a B&B to do some wine tasting somewhere for 4 days, and then head down to Washington. 1.5 hours is nothing in our book - we will willingly drive 5 hours in a day (we did this weekend - we spontaneously decided to go 5 hours away on Saturday, knowing we'd have to drive 5 hours back on Sunday - and it was a great trip).

Any wineries you'd recommend?

ugh. Everything. lol ... There are so many wineries right in north Seattle Like januik.
This is the one that everyone knows and loves as a reasonably priced brand though..
http://www.ste-michelle.com/

(they are located in woodenville, which is Seattle as well)
We have a great winery up here where I live in Mt Vernon. Mt Vernon is known as the tulip capital and there are 3 popular local wineries (and a few breweries) that make this incredible cranberry wine... mmm.. we always keep a couple bottles in out house for visitors. :)

The San Juans are perfect for a B&B.. you can kayak to see the orcas in Sept/October, they B&Bs are BEAUTIFUL!, your view is of the mountains and ocean, and this is a popular winery there
http://www.sanjuanvineyards.com/

Also, since you will be here in Sept/Oct, is shouldn't be too touristy since everyone is back in school and back to work for the year.
As it gets closer, seriously keep an eye on living social (since I see you on the MB board, I may randomly send you links when I see them) for incredible B&B prices.. Sometimes letting the budget plan the trip is fun :o) That's how we ended up hammered with Dustin and the Road Dog brew tours haha
