Faux Cake

has anyone seen this?  Is using it?  I went to a weddign this weekend and the couple had one and we didnt even know until she told me today.  Basically the cake is decorated the way you want to and then there is a small part of the cake that is real that you cut.  Then in the back you have a sheet cake that you cut up and serve to guests. I actually saw it on the Today's show as well...Its a lot cheaper than a real cake.  your thought.....

Re: Faux Cake

  • I thought about doing this or going the Walmart route. I'm going to be over budget. I have yet to see a real fake cake though

  • I have heard of it. I ask my baker about it and they dont do it but however, I doing a smaller wedding cake and sheet cake in the back. That way I can stay on budget.

    Yep. We had a fake tier. Our bakery said everyone pretty much do it to get a bigger cake without having way too much real cake left over. We had a 4 tier cake and since our layers were really huge, we had one of the tiers be fake. The grooms cake was 2 tiers by itself.

    For instance, when you see those really huge 5 and 6 teir cakes, one or more tiers is probably fake just to make the cake taller and look pretty. Our bakery told us that all of their customers ask for a least one fake tier. We only really needed 2 tier to feed everybody but our cake had 4. Its just a cheaper alternative to getting a large real cake, especially if all of the cake is not needed. The fake tier is usually way cheaper to make then a real tier.

  • I wanted my baker to do this but he said most of my charge for the cake I wanted was coming from the labor and time it's going to take him to decorate my design. So I guess it depends how simple or elaborate your cake is.
  • my plan is to have a small cake and a sheet cake in the back...

  • I've seen this done before. I agree with above posts.. totally depends on the bakery... some charge for how elaborate the decorations will be and for the time... If it helps you get what you want then I say do what makes you happy

    this here.   this is my problem with bakers who'll do the faux cake.   um, it's styrofoam, why in the rabid ass mind of it all would somebody think it's okay to charge 900 american dollars for styrofoam?   I love the idea of it and had gotten some forms so I could try it myself.  nodding at what shay said, the cost is in the labor so unless you decorate or can have it diy'ed, having your baker do it is as costly as real cake.  I should say, that's what I'd found, I hadn't come across anyone yet who could throw some fondant on my styrofoam block for less than 400.  {{headshake}}
