Inexpensive Cake Options

Hi all!

Cake is something that is not a priority to us, so we're trying to do it as cheap as possible. We went to a cake info thing at Dorothy Ann Bakery last weekend and they quoted us a two tier cake ( 6 and 8 inch I think, really basic) for cutting and a sheetcake for $190 + renting a cake stand. Do you ladies know if we'll be able to find a better deal? Our only thing is our vendor requires a licensed baker, so it can't be something we bring in ourselves.

Depends on what you're looking for. If cake isn't a big deal to you, what about going with a sheet cake or cupcakes? Can you get it from Costco or Sam's? Or doing something that is a big deal to you instead of cake. I was at a wedding last summer where the bride & groom really didn't care for cake so they had plates of Andes mints at the tables. At one point I was considering doing pies instead of cake (I may still do that). Or what about plates of assorted treats - bars, brownies, etc. ??

I'd like a cake to cut, just for the tradition sake of it, but those are all good ideas. The thing about Costco or Sams is that we can't bring it in, it has to be delivered (weird, I know). I love the pie idea, because I love pie, but does a "licensed baker" deliver pies? I can't just bring in ones I've bought.

H and I didn't care about cake either, so we got cheesecakes from Muddy Paws. It wasn't super cheap, but it was way less expensive than buying "real" wedding cake that neither of us would've wanted to eat. I want to say that it was about $350 which included cheesecake for our 70ish guests (with enough that almost everyone could have two slices, I think), stand rental, delivery and set-up. The table actually looked really nice, and they had all the flavors labeled clearly, etc. I'd highly recommend them!

This is kind of random but have you thought about ice cream cake? I used to work at a DQ and our cake decorater was THE best (she's won a bunch of awards and such). We made cakes for weddings all the time. We also made the "cupcakes" as well (they're mini ice cream cakes basically). A 10" cake was less than $30. Just a thought!

We went to a wedding this fall where the bride and groom didn't like cake, so they had a pie bar (delivered from Great Harvest Bread Co) and it was a hit! They had 6 flavors to select from and whipped cream to put on top - delish!

Jeff Perila of "Sweet Treats by Jeff" is super reasonable and his cake is amazing... I don't recall if he has cake stands to rent though. You can get very cute cake stands that would fit the size you're looking for at Home Goods or Marshalls for less than $10! Here's what our pricing breakdown was for Jeff's cake for our wedding reception last May:

(1) 2-tiered cake in 2 flavors ($167.50) />> 50 servings [12" base, 8" top, stucco-style frosting]
(1) 1-tiered grooms cake ($18.00) />> 10 servings [7" diam, stucco-style frosting]
(3) half sheet cakes in different flavors ($108) />> 42-48 servings per cake
(1) quarter sheet cake in marble ($22) />> 20-24 servings

With a $20 delivery fee, the total came to $335.50 and fed all 200 of our guests with plenty leftover

His prices may have increased since then, but the cake awesomeness is completely worth it! He has a lot of really good flavors and fillings... my favorite was the raspberry lemon torte.

Ditto this! Key's is fantastic in price and taste! I did my groom's cake from them as a surprise for DH since that was his favorite cake that we tried!

We booked Queen of Cakes in Edina for a sweetheart cake (feeds 10) that will top our cupcake tower and below will be 120 full sized, filled cupcakes. We wnt with the sweetheart cake to have something to cut (ha, and eat ourselves!). Our total including cupcake stand rental and possibly a $15 topper is a little over $300.

Also check into Jeff Perila, as others have recommended, though I don't know if he is licensed. He was booked already for our date but recommended Queen of Cakes. Queen of cakes was by far the best tasting and most affordable of our tastings.

Another vote for Sweets by Jeff- Jeff Perila! His cake is amazing and so are his prices.

What if you did a small cake for cutting and cupcakes for the guests? Jeff's cupcakes around just over $1.00 each.

ooh! Love the DQ idea!! If I had a way to keep it cold, I'd do that in a heartbeat! My reception is outdoors at a park.

Could a "licensed baker" be someone who went to pastry school at Le Courdon Blue? Maybe you know someone who did that.....

If you're having it anywhere near Apple Valley, they might deliver. I think they've done it before. So you could have them bring it to the park around the time you're going to be eating it. It's been a while since I've really talked to anyone I used to work with there so I have no idea!
