Flowers

I need help with centerpieces.

Basically my florist doesn't want to do my centerpieces because I want to provide some of the flowers. Understandable, sort of, except half of the flowers are still being provided by them and she is doing all the bouquets and bouts. Anyway, this leaves myself and some of my friends doing the centerpieces.

I am going to have succulents and real stem cut flowers in my centerpieces and I'm a little confused about how to put the succulents in. Can you put succulents in floral foam? I really liked the idea of using soil, but then the fresh cut's wont last, and the only water tubes I can find are like 3 inches long. Here is a picture of what I'll be doing, except the box will be wood. They are 12"x12" and about 4" tall.

Please help me!

Re: I need help with centerpieces.

  • floral foam would probably work just fine, but you might want to experiment and do a mock up centerpiece well in advance and see how long they will last.

If you keep them cool and the floral Oasis foam well watered (daily), you should probably be able to make the centerpieces 2-3 days in advance.
  • I would buy some of the succulents ahead of time and actually see how long they can last without water. For example, could you take the succulents, put a toothpick in them and then stick those in your floral foam at the last minute? My guess is they'd last at least a few hours, if not a day, before looking bedraggled. I mean, they grow in the desert where there isn't a lot of water.

Alternatively you could find plastic succulents and substitute them. I have a couple of tiny ones that came with the container from Walmart. To me succulents look almost plastic anyway. They have some at www.save-on-crafts.com. You can probably find them elsewhere.
