My trick

Thought I would share a little trick I use so I don't snack as much ..

If I feel the urge to aimlessly snack I go right upstairs and brush my teeth!  If any of you are like me I don't like to eat anything after I brush my teeth because 1) a lot of food tastes gross with the "fresh breath" taste and 2) once I have the fresh breath I don't want to get rid of it.  It totally works for me and you are keeping your teeth healthy at the same time!  (I usually end up brushing them 3-4 times a day)

Re: My trick

  • I use to brush my teeth excessively.  My dentist explained to me that I was actually over-brushing and wrecking my enamel.  Not a good thing.

But really, there is nothing wrong with snacking.  Just make it healthy!  Food is not the enemy.
  • Wouldn't gum chewing also work?

  • I tend to want to snack pretty late at night. I'll go and brush my teeth so I won't. My teeth have to be perfectly clean before I go to sleep and like PP said, I don't want to overbrush so it works for me at that time of day at least.

That doesn't work for me.  Stupid gum increases saliva production and makes me starving.  unless someone knows of a gum that doesn't do this as much?
  • Anna- I guess I never really thought of that.  Maybe that's why sometimes it doesn't work.  I also try and drink a bit of water because sometimes your body mistakes thirst for hunger.  Maybe a Halls cough drop?  They make you salivate, but I think they're gross so that would make me less hungry.
  • I just chew gum until it is time to eat again--it does increase saliva and help you digest your food faster--which is why it seem like it actually makes you more hungry. That is why I chew gum until it is time for my next meal, although I am a chain chewer. lol

  • I use the Listerine breath strips - they dissolve on your tongue (so no chewing, not much of the "saliva effect" you get with gum) and they taste like mouthwash, so it's a similar effect to brushing your teeth, without the enamel damage.

  • maybe instead of brushing a quick swig of mouthwash! That taste is way more potent for me and it's not over-brushing...
