Etsy Registry?

Hi!  I'm new to this board and cannot in my search find any reviews from people who have created registries with etsy.com.  Anyone have experience with this?  I love the idea of being able to get/give unique and possibly handmade items while supporting small business, too. But I wonder if the customer is protected if they don't receive the item from the seller (like Ebay) or what happens when items run out...many pieces are one-of-a-kind.
Thanks!

Re: Etsy Registry?

  • I've never heard of an Etsy registry.

Your best bet might be to use any cash gifts to get personalized stuff from Etsy.  It sounds like it would just be really complicated to let your guests know that you want a certain item from a certain vendor, and how to bring all of that together.

  • I don't think etsy has a registry.
  • I think it's fine--some guests may enjoy shopping on Etsy and shopping online.  I just looked and saw Etsy does have a registry feature.  I'm just not sure how it works if you register for something that is one-of-a-kind and it gets purchased by someone else.  I guess you could also ask shops to set up listings for you.  You could also just add things from Etsy to an Amazon universal registry, or something like that.
  • I've seen the Etsy registry, but I don't think I'd do it. I've had plenty of good experiences with etsy, but the handful that were not so good kinda ruined a lot for me. I'm fine with supporting small businesses, but as far as registering, until they can provide some guarantees as to item quality, ease of returns, or just plain getting items people pay for, I'd stick with the traditional stores for now.

  • Thanks for the opinions.  I signed up for the registry but couldn't find much of any actual instructions, guarantees, etc for the process on the site.  I have never purchased from there and from what some of you say, it could be a pain for family/friends to do so.  Not feeling comfortable going that route.  It's unfortunate, I think Etsy could provide more information and protection to customers buying from a registry which would be beneficial to their sellers.
  • I'm late to this, but I remember having a conversation forever ago on a board when they first rolled out the registry option on there. I buy stuff from Etsy at least one or more times a year, I do a ton a Christmas shopping on there and I've never had a bad experience with any of my sellers. I've just finished proofing my invitations that are being designed by a seller.

However, if I were going to register, it would be one of those things I would really have to keep an eye on. Because things are so one of a kind, you'd have to kind of stalk and see if something had been sold. Sometimes sellers do have duplicates, but they generally just re-list because you can't revive a "sold" listing. Also, if you decide to add some things, take the time to go through the sellers' feedback. And look at their products and where they are located. There are a lot of re-sellers based out of China and Southeast Asia on there, and those are going to be the hardest to return things to if you need to. You have to look at it kind of like the Amazon Universal registry for crafts. They can pull together all of these tiny businesses for you. However, if someone comes along and wants to buy things, it's not like they're going to keep it on hold forever for you, because what if you never come buy it?

  • I've seen the Etsy registry but I wouldn't do it as a wedding registry.  It's too confusing to guests and having all different vendors and stuff, paying for shipping, etc.  I would stick with a traditional registry.
  • Tons of cute unique gift ideas! check out http://www.etsy.com/shop/moonstonecreation. it is such a cute shop with tons of handstamped jewelry, bottle openers, military related jewelry, keychains, cufflinks, etc... Makes great wedding gifts for bridesmaids & groomsmen. I really like the key chain with a line from your vows stamped on. My hubby is reminded of our day and our promise everday.
