Plus-Sized

Plus size dress bust

I'm a plus size women and very comfortable with that. I was always getting pushed around as a kid bc i was MAYBE a buck 20 soaking wet and maybe a size 5 in high school. After my first marriage and kids i "filled out" (lol) and now i'm a large chested (DDD) woman with lots of curves. That being said I'm moving on to my second chance at happiness and where are all the fashion forward dresses for big girls?! i know the fashion industry has gotten "better" about using plus size models but every site i've looked at with plus size gowns all of them are BORING.

I fell in love with this dress....

...knowing there was a good chance it wasn't going to come in my size (which it didn't) but i love it anyway. Where are the big girl gowns like this? Am i missing something?

Re: Plus size dress bust

  • First of all,  we need more info:

    Budget?
What about that do you love?  The revealing aspect?  The crazy skirt?  The silhouette?

Your other posts say you don't want a white dress...What color do you want?

  • My dress designer has a plus size collection. They have more "fashion forward" designs, although I picked something more traditional. www.bonny.com/collections/unforgettable You can search for local stores that carry Bonny. My dress was $790 so I imagine most of their dresses are somewhere around that.
  • Mori Lee has a great selection of plus size dresses.  check it out.
  • I got a Bonny dress also. They have a lot of wonderful dresses. They seem to fit better than other dresses I tried on. I paid about 400 for mine.
    Daisypath Anniversary tickers
  • I am having the same issues that you are having, with findy trendy dresses that are a bit more fashion forward (although, my front runner right now is a tad more traditional of a gown)

anyway- Most designers do carry plus sizes, but you won't find a sample in that size.

My issue with "plus size" bridal stores around here is that they simply carried brands that didn't really have anything but traditional bridal gowns for "bigger girls" IE : Aline, plain, simple, or a halter version of that same dress.

    It can be a challenge.

What i ended up doing was first, finding a silhoutte that i loved. And that worked with my body to flatter me. Then tried on dresses in said silhoutte- even if it was a dress i wasnt interested in. As long as it fit to get an idea. I'd then end up kind of pinning the other dresses to me. OR, At least i knew that silhoutte looked good, so i could base my dress pick from that- knowing just the detailing would be different.

    I hope that this helps.

Please let us know your intended budget and like Kome said[ what you LOVE about that other dress.

then we can help you search- after all, we love searching for bridal gowns :)

AHH another Bonny bride!!! We are few and far between. Which design do you have? Mine was 1004: <a href="http://www.bonny.com/collections/unforgettable/1004">http://www.bonny.com/collections/unforgettable/1004</a>
  • The site i found it on said the top of the dress could be dyed differant colors but the skirt would be white. (which i'm ok with as long as the majority of the dress is not white)

As for the reason why i liked it.....well thats ticky to explain. I've seen many dresses like this and normally i hate mermaids, I also tend to be a more modest person when it comes to my everyday clothing choices but this dress just screamed at me, maybe it is the skirt that is remeniscent of feathers. I usually lean more toward a sheath style, i like that its non traditional (which is very me) and i really like some of the slightly sexier styles. Like this...

....although i would try to have it altered so that sash attached as a one shoulder strap.

I haven't ruled anything out completly bc certian designers have taken very traditional styles and made them fashion forward. Like pnina tornai taking a ball gown and putting an almost see through corset on top. But i will say i'm usually not a fan of ball gowns. Alines are ok ( i like the drop waist ones best), mermaid/fit and flare.....eh some of them, and sheaths are ok if made right (i usually like the empire waist ones).

Colors ~ I don't like the blush pinks at all, no white or ivory either. I've seen several RED dresses i like a few plum dresses and a purple one...

Price~ the closer to free the better. lol I'm not one to care much about name brands as long as it looks good. So the knock off dresses from over seas are fine with me. they can always be altered. But if i was to go shopping in a bridal store i would be willing to put as much as $3000 on my dream dress.

  • So what I am getting from your post is you really don't have a definite picture of what you want.

You want color of some sort, are open to shape but the more "sexy" the better?, and like the idea of feather-eqsue details?

<div>The problem with overseas knockoffs is that they don't usually look good.  In fact, they can be downright unwearable.  Bad stitching, wrong fabric, wrong size, beading and lace falling off or missing, poorly cut...you name it, brides have been burned by it.  And their return policies are often horrible, even if it's their mistake, and if they honor it at all.  I'd only go that route if  you already have a dress you're comfortable with, and are willing to lose money away in a gamble at a dream dress.</div><div>
</div><div>With that budget, are there any seamstresses that could either make a dress for you outright, or who could make major alterations?  If you find something in the right color and a flattering fit, you may be able to afford having the neckline altered or a slit leg added.</div><div>

This. I was going to say this, but Raptor beat me to it. Check out the Attire & Accessories board for examples. You can also Google "china knock off dresses" or something like that. It's not just the sizing; it's the very low quality of the dress.

The designer Sophia Tolli has some colored (well part color, part white) dresses.

ETA: I can't post a picture from the website. The "Jewel" dress has a turquoise top. "Lacey" is black and white. "Ivon" is black, white and grey with a crazy skirt.
I think Sophia Tolli has some beautiful gowns, not boring at all. I had my heart set on one until I found my Maggie Sottero.

i thought about it in her first post, and then when she said she didn't want anything to do with ivory or blush... prom dresses would be MUCH cheaper than colored bridal dresses!

  • Haha love it. That 2nd pic should be her sig pic!!
  • I just ordered a Maggie Sottero dress in an 18- I'm a 38DD-DDD.  :)  I think my dress is somewhere between very formal and elegant and dead sexy.  Maggie was the only designer I found that I really liked the look of, though I did try on a few Alfred Angelos that were nice.  There was one halter-top that was ADORABLE (and flattering) but had WAY too much cleavage for me.  There's lots of options if you don't mind having the girls out there for everyone to see.  :)  I wanted to cover them up a little more.

What you need to look for is not (I found) dressed that are designed for plus-sized women - those are boring.  But just gorgeous dresses that also come in women's sizes.

Thats good advice. I didn't think about it that way. Thank you.

And to answer what a few of you posted yes i have thought about going the prom dress route. I feel i will probablly get closer to what i am ultimately wanting without breaking the budget. "My Dress" doesn't have to scream WEDDING DRESS as long as its grand/beautiful/glamorous enough to say "yep thats the bride." i don't want to be mistaken for a brides maid ya know. lol
