Mostly NWR: Surgery Today

I'm having my tonsils out today (4:30pm), agh!  They told me not to eat/drink after midnight so I'm so hungry and thirsty (and its going to be 90+ here today at the hottest...thank God for A/C).

Likely, I'll be around even more since I'm out of work for two weeks.  Gives me all kinds of time to work on little wedding details!

  • I can't believe they scheduled you for 4:30 when you can't eat and drink!! That's crazy. Good luck!

<div>What they should have done is said that I couldn't eat or drink after 8am!  I'm a nurse and I know that you only need to be NPO for 8 hours before surgery, not 16!  Technically, you can have clear liquids up until a few hours before surgery!</div><div>
</div><div>I'll just follow the rules because I don't want to cause issues, but seriously?  I just hope they don't turn me into a pin cushion trying to get an IV in me with no fluid today...YIKES!</div>
  • I hope everything goes well and that you have a quick recovery : )

  • A SIP of water won't hurt if you're dying of thirst! Good luck and hope everything goes well.

  • Wow!  That's kinda late in the day for a scheduled surgery, isn't it?  Hmmm, anyway, here's hoping for a speedy recovery!

<div>I know...I think its because my doctor doesn't have regularly scheduled surgery days at this particular hospital so they fit her in when they could.  I'm thinking that she may have requested the later time so she didn't have to cancel her patients for the day as well.</div>
  • That sucks for you!  Well, once again, I hope everything goes smoothly for you!  :)

  • I cant believe they would schedule you that late, how ridiculous...and just like you said as long as the patient doesnt eat or drink within 8 hours of the surgery they are usually good to go. I worked in the OR for 5 years before doing what I am doing now. Crazy!!
I might be having surgery soon, and I will definitely be telling them...NO I want early.

  • Thanks everyone!  I'm home now.  Got into the OR around 6pm, out around 7pm and home at 9:30pm.  I did pretty good and am feeling okay for now, but I've been told that they give you a boatload of medication in the OR and it will wear off.

And now for my three weeks off Laughing
  • Glad everything's ok!!
