Picking a honeymoon - Dominica, Hawaii, elsewhere?

Hey y'all, my BF and I have been talking casually about honeymoon locations recently. I was hoping someone would be able to give us some advice!

We're (almost certainly) getting married the last week of May 2012, and would like to leave immediately thereafter for the honeymoon, wherever it may be.

We're interested in: beautiful scenery, nature walks/hikes, snorkeling, beaches, and being "away from it all."

We have no interest in: dancing, spa treatments, drinking, or cruises.

I speak limited Spanish, but BF would prefer to go someplace where English is spoken. I was thinking either Dominica or Big Island in Hawaii, (the volcanoes sound like a fascinating sight to see.) I'd like to have something to see or do that's fairly unique to the location, too. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

  • The Big Island is gorgeous! It's one of the less touristy islands, and Kilauea is really cool. I'd also recommend going up Mauna Kea (a dormant volcano) and doing a star gazing tour there.
  • What about food/drinks?  Do you want those included?

If so, Hawaii doesn't have all inclusives...however I have been to the Big Island and loved it! Kilauea is awesome.

We stayed in Hilo.  There was a place called "Family Pool" about 20 min drive or so from our hotel that was gorgeous.  It was an inlet were ocean water combined with water heated by the volcano, just a pretty little swimming area and we saw sea turtles in the ocean there.

Also, what about Mexico?  At the resorts there they all speak English.
  • The Big Island is big enough that you could stay in a few different places around it. I love visiting Hilo, but the frequent downpours can put a chilly damper on things. There are adorable B&Bs in Volcano, and getting a condo in Kona can be a great way to stay off the resorts (and have a bit more privacy) on the cheap.
  • Big Island!! I'm biased, I lived on Oahu and the most romantic time of my life was a vacation on the big island.

Depending on what type of travelers you are, you could start with a few days in Hilo (hang out, enjoy the town, drive the volcano state park, hike part of it, do a nighttime volcano hike if you're up to it, check out that side of the island) then drive around the south tip and up the other coast to where Kona is. Spend a few more days in Kona (or hole up in a Waimea B&B- gorgeous!!).

& as for unique to that location: Punalu'u Beach is a black sand beach where sea turtles come ashore.
Also, if you've never been in a tropical rainforest, they're absolutely amazing.
  • We were just in dominica (just for a cruise stop)  but we loved it.  We intend to go back for an extended visit, hopefully sometime soon.  When we do, we plan to stay here:
http://www.cocoacottages.com/rooms.cfm  It is an amazingly gorgeous island.  It was really unlike any place I've been before.
I have never been to Hawaii, so I can't compare the two.
