Skip the cake?

I am not that excited about the wedding cake and every wedding I have ever been to, the cake looks amazing but tastes bad.  I have been looking at prices and they want around 800 for a wedding cake......I really want to skip that!

My wedding theme is shabby chic.  Our ceremony and reception are located on a orchard with tons of trees and its just a very relaxed place!  I want to carry that theme throughout my whole wedding, including the "cake".  I was thinking of asking a few people to make homemade pies and I could stagger them and arrange them differently on the cake table.  These pies would be instead of my cake and would be more with my theme!

  What do you think?

I think it's great to offer pies instead of cake; as a guest, I'm happy with whatever dessert I'm offered.

I love the idea of going homemade for the pies, but please don't ask your guests to do any of the baking for you. I'm not sure if that's what you were implying by getting people to bake them. It's a HUGE stress on them - and I say this as someone who was working in the kitchen for my cousin's wedding in August. Find a great little bakery and roll with it.

I like the pie idea (or some alternative to cake), but don't ask your guests to make them for you.  If they offer, then you could consider it, although keep in mind that some venues and caterers won't allow you to get food from an unlicensed provider.  I would just find a bakery to make the pies--it will still be cheaper than a traditional wedding cake.

Ditto PP. Pies sound great but check with your venue about their rules & regulations on outside food and don't ask anyone to bake for you.

Get a "show cake" where only the top layer is real (other layers typically styrofoam), but all decorated beautifully. Thats what we are doing, and my dads wife is making cheesecakes and pies for our real dessert for our guests.

Thanks so much for all of the feedback!  As for the pies I wouldn't have my guests make them and bring them.  However, my aunt makes the BEST homemade cherry pies and I may have her make one or two!  She has offered to help out and this would be here little way of helping!

I really like the pie idea because it goes more with my theme and you could get way more variety.  Now I just need to go price it and make sure it will be cheaper!

Totally do the pies!!! Noone will miss the cake. I've been to tons of weddings where they forego the wedding cake and I've never even noticed. This will 100% be a huge money saver for you!

And I disagree with others about unequivocally not asking people to pitch in. We don't know your friends and family - maybe some of them will be more than happy to bake a pie or two (it's really not a very onerous task!)

Your Aunt and maybe some others will be happy to do this and it adds to the personal, DIY, shabby chic vibe. I've been to many weddings with DIY desserts and they're delicious! Some people are actually very generous and honoured to be a part of your wedding in a special way!
