Flower girl -- too old?

Ok so we have a flower girl dilemma -- we'd both like to have one, but we don't know any little girls! Everyone we know has little boys, it's insane!

My family is really close with my parents' neighbors who have a daughter going into 4th grade -- is that too old for a flower girl? I would LOVE for her to do it, but I'm wondering if girls her age think is "uncool" to be a flower girl...? I don't know much about kids... haha. I don't remember what I was like in 4th grade.

What do you think?

Re: Flower girl -- too old?

  • My oldest nephew will be 9 and he is a ring bearer.  I don't think it's too old.

I think she's right on the age border where she can be either an older flower girl or a younger junior bridesmaid. If I were you I would ask her parents if she would like to be a flower girl, I think most girls her age would be excited to be in a wedding.  One of our flower girls will be almost 8 at our wedding next year.

  • I agree with the PP, I think the girl's parents would know if she'd want to be a flower girl or not. I personally don't think it's too old though.

  • My niece will be in the 4th grade next year and she would be mortified if she was a flower girl, but she also plays hockey and rides 4 wheelers.  She will be a young Jr.bridesmaid, but I am lucky that FI has a niece who will be in kindergarten so she will be our flower girl.  I would definitly get the parent's input.  All kids are different so I would not go by some arbitrary age cut off.

  • I would agree that she's right on the edge and it depends on the girl. I was one of three flower girls in my aunt's wedding when I was 10. One was a little older than me, and the other was only 2 or 3. I was fine with it at the time, but looking back feel a little weird about it. Then again, her whole wedding was weird.

I dont think she is too old. I was a flower girl in the 4th grade.

  • I agree with the PPs, I would ask the parents first if they think she is interested. I personally dont think its too old.

  • I was a flower girl for my sister when I was 8.  My flower girl will be 2 y/o at the time of the wedding.  I agree with pp, ask the parents :)

  • You guys are right... I'm going to wait until next year, then ask her parents. I guess if we don't have a flower girl it's not the end of the world. We already have 5 "usherettes" because we have SO many high-school age girls in our family (and a surplus of little boys).

    Thanks for the advice!
