Italy Price?!

Just wondering, for a honeymoon in Italy, how much would that be? What's the cheapest time of year to go?

Re: Italy Price?!

  • This depends on one zillion factors.

    Where are you flying from?
Do you want a five star hotel?
Do you like to eat out at fancy restaurants?
How many places in Italy do you plan on traveling to?
    Do you enjoy touristy things?

I recommend you plug in some dates into expedia or travelocity to get an idea of airfare.  I then recommend you pick up a travel book and get an idea of where you'd like to stay so you know how much hotels cost.  The travel book will always tell you prices of attractions, cabs, restaurants, and tips on how to get around.  From that, you should be able to put together a reasonable idea of how much this will all cost.
  • that's a SUPER broad question.

generally the cheapest time to go is during the off season-mid jan to april.

how much depends on a trillion other factors. i suggest you post your budget and those of us who have gone can give you an idea of if it will work and how to make it work.

  • I booked my european honeymoon through EuropeanDestinations.com and it was a very good website. I put in the dates I wanted to go and the city I was coming from and came up with a budget based on that information.
I would say minimum for Airfare, Hotel, Transportation would be 4000 probably for about a 6 night stay. But that is a complete guess and could go up or down from there.

  • We flew from Boston to Rome and back last July.  The airfare was $1500 per person.  It really depends on where you're flying from and time of year.  Hotels can be as cheap or expensive as you want to spend.
  • As others have mentioned, the price can vary based on multiple different factors.

We went to Italy last September for two weeks and spent $5000. This did not include airfare as we got that for free using my frequent flier miles.

The cheapest time of year to fly is generally the winter months (November-February). Prices for hotels will also be slightly cheaper during this part of the year, although there might be an increase around Christmas and New Years.
  • It really depends on when/where/what kind of honeymoon you're looking for. I backpacked through 13 cities in 23 days a few years ago for just under $3500 (including supplies like a pack before I left and a $550 21-day train ticket). I went to Rome & Venice in Italy.

If you're looking to go to Rome in mid-May to September, flights/hotels will be higher. If you're looking to have a more pampered honeymoon (super nice hotels, fancy restaurants), it will be higher. If you're looking to take day trips to other cities instead of remaining in just one city, it will be higher.

A few tips for keeping the cost down: 1) if you're a student/teacher, look into STA (www.statravel.com). You can get a lot of discounts, as your local university ID won't be accepted in a lot of places in Europe. 2) Don't forget about hostels...many of them have private rooms that can be cheaper than hotels and you can also socialize a bit as they usually have a lounge area somewhere in the hostel. The people who work there are also excellent at restaurant recommendations and attractions. 3) Decide on what you want to splurge on and what you can give up if you have a limited budget. We stayed at hostels and bought food from a grocery store for breakfast and lunch or dinner, but we made sure we ate one nicer meal a day and we did a lot of fun things (like whitewater rafting in Interlaken, Switzerland).
  • We are going on our honeymoon to Italy at the end of July for 13 days. We're flying from Wash DC to Venice, then traveling to Florence and Rome. Flights ran about $1500 each and the total cost of the trip will be just over $8000. But, we had a travel agent who specializes in honeymoon travel book everything for us, since this was a big splurge trip for us. I'm sure we could have done it for MUCH cheaper, but it's our honeymoon!
