What can I use instead of weights?

Hi,
I'd like to tone up my arms and thought some reps of 5 lb weights would be good to do.  Until I get a chance to get to the store to buy them, has anyone used anything around the house in place of normal weights for exercises?  Just curious if anyone's found a work around.  To be honest, I'd love to not have to buy one more thing while planning this wedding :)

Thanks!

Re: What can I use instead of weights?

  • Filled water bottles are good substitutes for smaller weights!
  • Hey!  I'm not sure where at in Philly you live, but if you have a 5 Below store near you (I know there's one near the IKEA in South Philly), but they sell weights for ridiculously cheap ($5 or under). That's where I have gotten a lot of my workout stuff from and saved a lot of money. Or, like PP said, fill bottles with water or even small rocks from outside works as well. Hope this helps!

  • Yes, there is a 5 below right near me so awesome!  I'm on it.  And great advice about the water bottles!

    Thanks so much!

  • Milk jugs, large canned goods, small children for bench pressing :) haha jk. I used to "bench press" my dad's trumpet case.

Honestly, I'd google "the 100 pushup challenge" and do that. It's sure to tone your arms & core & back with no weights at all.
  • Hiya,

Not sure if might help but a friend recommended an elastic excercise band for me to help tone as they can be transported anywhere (I sometimes take mine to work!) and you can tone your arms, legs and stomach using different techniques and positions, and also you can adjust the resistance as you get stronger.

I also have a really small apartment so this was a great space saver.

    Good luck! xx

  • If you really want to tone up your arms, I would also suggest using a higher weight than 5 lbs.  I'd get at least 8 or 10 lbs to start, if you don't currently have a lifting program.  Higher weights help you make more muscle, and therefore 'tone' up.  Lower weight repetitions build your stamina, but it won't cause the tearing and rebuilding cycle that helps build up your muscles.
