NWR: serious question

Ladies, I have a serious question. I Have been on the same birth control pill for years, and Sunday I just started my new pack. Today I totally blanked on taking my pill, which would be the second day of the new pack. I feel like an idiot! I always take it the same time every day. Am I still protected? I just took it, since I remembered, but it is 14 hours late. Ahhhh. Do I need to get the morning after pill too?

Re: NWR: serious question

  • Only way to know for sure is to ask your doctor and I'd only do the morning after pill if your doctors said to even though can just purchase it since that and your birth control would be an overload of hormones. Personally in my experience you don't have anything to worry about, I've been on the same birth control for years and have had my days where taken it an entire day late cause just completely forgot and was told one day isn't a problem but missing 3 days where you have to restart the pack is where it gets possible. Also since you've been on it for years your body isn't going to readjust in 14 hours, from what I know it typically takes a couple months after stopping the pill for your system to start ovulating again.

  • I agree with Sj. You can call your doctor if you're that worried but I've been on the same pill for years and miss a day every few months. My doctor had told me that if I miss one day it's ok to just take both pills together the next day (which usually makes me nauseous). I feel like you're still fine even though it was 14 hours late.

  • I agree with bar and sj, you should still be good, but you can always call your doctor just to check. I've missed pills by a day and just doubled my dose the next day without an issue, which is what your doctor (and the instructions that come with the pill) will most likely tell you.
  • It takes a long time for your body to adjust if you have been taking the pill for a long time. For example, I was on the pill for like 6 years, and then I stopped taking it. I spoke to my doctor first, and just didn't start my new pack. I didn't get a period for about a month after that. Of course I freaked because I thought I was pregnant right away, but it's actually really common. Your body needs to go back to ovulating on it's own and it takes time, so you should be fine by missing it just one day. It would be extremely rare for your body to all of a sudden release an egg after it hasn't done so in years just from 1 day of missing, especially when you are at the start of your pack. The starting part of your pack is usually the least amount of hormones in the whole thing, and you wouldn't technically be "ovulating" unti the 2nd week if it was a natural cycle anyway. I'm back on the pill now, but when you decide you are ready to have kids, make sure to end the pill like a month before that. As long as youtook the one you missed, and take your next one as scheduled, you should be fine. But like all the other girls said, if you are worried, just call your Dr for advice.

  • The typical rule of thumb is if you miss one you're still okay, but if you miss two you're not. However, that's generally speaking. Only your doctor will know for sure. I know I've missed a pill in a pack before and didn't use secondary protection and never have had an issue.

I agree with everyone else. Since you double dosed, and in under 24 hours, you should be fine. You've been on the pill in general for long enough that you should still be residually proctected.

  • Thanks ladies! Now I have another question, can being on bc for years make it hard for me to have kids? I was on it for 3 years, off for one, and now back on it for a little over 3 years. I know y'all aren't dr.'s, but I was just curious if anyone knew.

  • Honestly I'm not 100% sure, that's more of a question for your doctor and may vary from person to person. The only thing I know for sure is that I had a friend on it for years and her dr. told her it could take up to 6 months after coming off to get pregnant (or for it to wear off I'm not sure exactly). Anyways she came off a few months before her wedding and was pregnant within a month so she was about 2 months prgnant at the time of her wedding.

  • Wow! Well thanks for the help girls. I will have to ask my doctor about the last question.

  • I asked my doctor about it possible making it hard to have kids since I have been on it for 6 years. Fiance was going to be gone for almost a year so I considered stopping taking it for that time in case being on it so long did cause problems and she said no theres nothing about it that would make it harder to have kids and that if I liked the side effects that it was better to just stay on it while he was gone then to make my body readjust twice. She also said the same things mentioned above that the longer on it the longer it can take for my body to get back on a regular cycle after stopping but that it would.

  • I'm going on 8 years and my Dr assured me, after multiple times asking, that there is zero evidence that says it effects your ability to get pregnant. She also said that it could be helpful in that it makes you not release eggs. Since women only make a certain number of eggs, its actually preserving them. Hopefully she's right! Lol

  • You ladies have really boosted my confidence as I have always worried that being on BC would really hurt my chances of getting pregnant in the future.  I have been taking it since before I was active since I have dysmenorrhea so its been about 6 years and will probably be on it another 3.  Now I did stop about 4 years ago and the pains started coming back about 3 months later (so I got back on), if thats any indication to OP saying that only 1 day should not cause any issues.

  • My mom actually confronted me a few months ago about how being on the pill could hurt my chances of getting pregnant when I wanted to. I was so upset at her because I am not ready to have kids yet and know it will be a few more years. Still I DO want to have kids and would be devastated if I couldn't just because I had been preventing it for so long.

  • Like all the other girls said, your doc will really be the one to answer this question. I have known girls who have been adversely affected by the pill, but none that haven't been able to conceive after taking it for a long time. There are risks and side effects with every medication. I know a girl who was on BC for 10 years and it started making her hair fall out! I don't want that to scare you because she did end up conceiving a perfectly healthy little girl AND her hair grew back. Just a freak side effect, I suppose. Every woman is different.

I personally am not on any hormonal BC anymore. I was on it ond and off for about 5 years. I struggle w/anxiety and occasional depression so I have found out that BC really affects my moods and just overall upsets my equilibrium. Using barrier protection is a pain, but my body just feels better when it is on it's normal cycle with no added hormones to make me even more emotional.

  • Read Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. It's only about $14 on amazon and it will answer most of your questions about getting pregnant after the pill (and also give you a ton of information about your body that I guarantee you never learned in sex ed)

  • Being on BC for a long time can definitely cause some difficulty concieving immediately after stopping, but most problems can resolve themselves after 6-12 months. Of course this isn't always the case since so many people actually do concieve while on the pill. If you are concerned about concieving right away, reading TCOYF can help with that too
