Haliimaile General Store for Rehearsal Dinner?

We are thinking of having our rehearsal dinner at HGS. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Update: It is only 10 minutes from where we are staying.

I absolutely love the general store! The food is amazing especially the sashimi napoleon. I say go for it if it fits in your budget.

My only complaint / caution is that it's a 30-45 minute drive from most areas of the island, so if you have errands or are super tired, it's quite a ways to go. Aside from that, though, it's my single favorite restaurant on Maui, and if it weren't for the distance, we absolutely would have had our rehearsal dinner there too!

HGS was very good. We had a family dinner there last year. I agree with Tanq that it is far from the major hotel areas on the island. Get a drink or two, they're delicious!

We've added HGS to our list of places to list while on our planning trip. I think will go with it for our RD, but just want to make sure. We were just going to go to a little place in Paia, but figured it'd be better to do something nicer. It's not far from us, so I think it will work out well. I'm excited to check it out.

I second Tanq's comments -- Hali'imaile General Store is FAR from where most people will want to stay. Trust me I grew up on Maui and I drove by Hali'imaile every day on my way to school in Up-Country Maui (a 45 minute commute from Kihei). Considering the highest speed limit on the island of Maui is about 55 MPH, HGS is probably 30-40 minutes from Kihei/Wailea and 50+ from Lahaina/Ka'anapali side. To be honest, Pai'a is not the most desirable area of the island to stay if you want the resort/pampered experience and the nice beaches, and guests might want to stay in the aforementioned areas.

In any case, HGS has awesome food, but is a little pricey. We had my morning-after-graduation breakfast there (yes, we had a project graduation type deal) and they did a nice job with the catering for about 120 people.

Our guests are staying in Paia, as well as us. They don't want to have to drive over a half an hour each way each day for the wedding activities and wedding. The welcome dinner, wedding, reception and mahalo brunch are all in Paia. There's only 21 of us in all going and so far, 11 of them are booked in Paia. None of us are resort kind of people and many are booking condos to stay in. The rehearsal dinner needs to be close to Mama's Fish House since that's were we are staying and are getting up really early the next day for the wedding, we are already having our reception at Mama's and we'd like to have the dinner somewhere close to Paia, but not at any of the little restaurants they have there since it's for the rehearsal dinner.

If anyone has any other suggestions for nice places to eat within 15 of Paia and can serve vegetarians, as well as carnivores, let me know. We can check those places out on our planning trip, as well.

Have you considered Charley's...that's where we're hosting our mahalo brunch. Its not fancy but its in Paia and the food is good. It is a saloon. HTH! J. :-)

Just another thought that may be fun...however i'm not sure the distance from where you are staying. Have you considered the small cowboy town of Makawao...there is a recommended restaurant called Casanova. I think Polli’s is more informal...just copied this from my website. HTH! J. :-)

We are going to go to HGS while we are on our planning trip and a couple other places. Will figure out from there where to have the dinner. I do know we want somewhere nicer with really great food that's close to Paia.
