Waxing....

For the ladies here that wax their sensitive area....

I would like to wax for the Wedding but have heard that I should do it a couple times before then.... so for those that have experience when should I start this painful process? ???

Re: Waxing....

Oh good discussion...I heard the same thing.  Just thinking about it makes me hurt though...

I would definitely recommend going several months before. The first time likely will be the most painful. But it really isn't as bad as everyone makes it seem. I go to Juut salon in Roseville and I've actually developed a friendly relationship w/ my esthetician, lol. She's great and most esthetician's are so used to doing it that they don't make it awkward at all. Usually I have long conversations while it's going on! Take ibuprofen about a half hour or hour before you go, it will help. Most salons also offer an oil that you use after you shower that really helps the redness and swelling (usually nothing bad at all, just for the first few days) go down. It isn't bad, I promise! I swear by it. Since you're getting married in May, I'd recommend going once in March and April too. ALSO, make sure you do NOT go within 4 or so days of your period. It makes the area MUCH more sensitive. HTH!

ETA: ALSO, do NOT shave between waxes. It makes the process basically start all over because it makes the hair courser. It will be tempting but DON'T. :)

I'd say March and April then before you're wedding ought to be good. But if you have the money I'd say going once before then couldn't hurt. I know you're in st. cloud but if you make it down the the cities I really like The Refinery Salon. I went there my first time and the lady talked me through it so I knew what to expect :)

I thought the fulll brazilian was VERY painful but I've only done it once so maybe I didn't go enough to develop immunity lol.. It's only really bad in the super sensitve areas though and does go pretty quickly if you have a good waxer.. I don't think you have to go multiple times but if you do I wouldn't go more than once a month before your date..

Nikki I acutally live in Robbinsdale, btwn Mpls and Brooklyn Center-- at least currently. I work in Fridley and will be commuitng when I move back to st. cloud in April ... and I plan to go to The Refinery too!!!  They have awesome deals and its around $25 for wax with their specials (I believe). I have gotten a facial there a couple times and the girl also does waxing and was telling me to get couragious and do it.

Thanks ladies! I wont be seing FI until the wedding so I think I'll be okay not shaving btwn. ;)
still ouch! haha at least she said it will only take 15 mins... I am just going to prepare like I did for my tattoos. ;)

Thanks for the question and sharing your input - always been curious myself!

    Musica -
I've heard that Juut in Roseville recommended for other things - but also heard a bad opinion - do you go there for all your spa stuff (mani/pedis, facials)?

    Do they use Aveda products?

ETA: wait - I mixed them up with Rocco Altobelli.  So I guess I haven't heard anything about them - so just the "do you go there for all your spa stuff (mani/pedis, facials)?"  part - sorry and thanks!

I like the Refinery too! :) I've been there to get my legs waxed, but that's all. But I loved getting my hair done there when I lived on the U of M campus.

k8ly- Funny enough, I use Juut for my waxing and Rocco's for my hair. Haha. I didn't like Juut's prices as far as the rest of their services go, but I love Lynn (my esthetician) and even though her prices are a little steep (around 50-70 depending on going brazilian or regular bikini), I like to support her because she is a single mom with two ADORABLE little girls. She even sent me a personal Christmas card, not just one of those business holiday cards. Anyway, I know they are good at hair/nails/etc but I just can't afford to go there! I go to Lolita at Rocco's for my hair though and I love her. I haven't been to Rocco's for anything else but hair though. I don't do my nails or toes because nail polish freaks me out. lol.

ETA: and no, Rocco's doesn't use Aveda, but Juut does!

Thanks for the advice/recommendation - I think I'm so gonna try that.  Lynn - got it.

I've been going to my hair stylist for over 10 years now, but I'm trying to find an alternative to the "strip mall" places for a mani/pedi that won't break the bank - my friend always gets harassed because she's Asian, but doesn't speak the language - her words, not mine.  I, unfortunately, don't like the smell of lavender - which permeates all Aveda products, so I'm kind of limited.

Oh, let me know if you see Lynn, k8ly! She is such a sweetheart. The other nice thing about Juut is the privacy of the rooms. They have soothing music playing and it smells really good. :P

I know what you mean about finding a decent place to get nails done outside of strip malls--my mom struggles with that too. I really don't like people touching my nails or nail polish in general, so I guess I haven't had the problem much. I'm kind of scared to get a french manicure for my wedding because I get kind of queasy when people do my nails! i'm so weird. :P

What part of the metro are you in? I know Refinery does mani/pedi's too. I go to Nail Montage in Maple Grove for their axuum manicures and I'm in love. Its $35 but lasts for around 3 weeks. Pedi's I'm not really paticular :) I go the strip mall route.

I'm in the Camden area of North Mpls, and work in Roseville.  I looked up Refinery - they're in Uptown?  Hmmmm.

Is Axuum that new gel stuff?  The Mystic Nails on my way home (strip mall) did that without me asking last time, and I didn't think it lasted any longer.  It didn't chip - but it scratched big chunks out of the french white tip, and I had a heck of a time getting it off my nails.

I'm not particular either - I do the strip malls, but it's my friend's birthday in a couple weeks so I want her to be comfortable - plus she's a BM....so would be nice to find a place that won't cost my bridal party an arm and a leg.

Thinking of that at home place for that someone mentioned - Asthetic Affair, I think it was.

I LOVE waxing and am totally addicted to it now. I cant tell you the last time I shaved.

I started waxing about a year out from the wedding just because I wanted to give it a try. I would say you might want the wedding to be maybe your 3rd time waxing there and you should wait about 4 weeks between waxes so you should prolly start maybe 2-3 months out.

I also go to the Refinery in minneapolis and it is so worth the drive for me. They are fast and very reasonable price wise.

It also doesnt hurt as much as you would think. Yes for a split second it does but then it goes away. I am usually just a little tender there that night and maybe a bit into the next day, but by the following day I am good to go! So if you are doing it for the wedding then I would say get waxed Thursday for a Saturday wedding.

And unlike shaving for me that leaves little red bumps and hurts to rub across it the wrong way - waxing leaves me totally smooth and touchable :).

I have tried the brazilian and just dont care for it - both the look and the fact that it is harder to direct your pee - sorry for those where this is TMI :). I much prefer the tailored bakini waxes.

But I would def recommend trying it! For me it is way better than shaving!

From what I can tell, the Refinery might be worth it price difference for waxing - I drive to St Paul for my stylist, just cuz I love her so much - but the nails at all these places just blow my mind.  I know the "strip mall" places deal in sheer volume - but the cheapest salon one I can find is in Nordeast starting at $75 for a "Spa" mani/pedi.

All these other places are around $100!  I can get a spa mani/pedi at the strip mall places for $60 - including tip!  (I'm prob preaching to the choir here.)

ETA - and I'm so not into the idea of a Brazilian - I have no interest in looking/feeling like a 10 year old.  (No offense to those who like it, there's just somthing creepy about it for me.)

I go to Sabrina at the Edina Spalon Montage and she is amazing!  A couple tips:

    - I think going twice would be fine before the wedding, you don't need to do it several times to get used to it or anything.  I go about 6 weeks apart, so 3-4 months before the wedding would be perfect.  See how your skin reacts after the wax, but for me I would do it 6-7 days before the wedding.

    - Trim before your appointment so that the hair is about 1/2 inch long.  If its too short, the wax won't grab it at all, and if its too long, the wax will grab too much at a time and you will get a patchy strip that needs to be waxed over again.

    - Definitely take the ibuprofen!  It helps :)

    - I use a product called PFB Vanish after the waxes.  It is essentially a drying agent, and prevents ingrown hairs which are the major concern after waxing.  I highly, highly recommend it.. Its $20 at Spalon but lasts for a really long time.

    - Most important: Make sure you waxer doesn't "double dip."  This means that they use a single wooden applicator (looks like a popsicle stick) to dip repeatedly into the same pot of wax they use for everyone.  They change the applicator for each client, but dip into the wax they use for the clients all day.  This seems ridiculous right??  But I went to a very high end salon outside D.C. when I lived there, and they did this - I noticed right away, ended the appointment immediately, and left.  If you don't want to straight out ask your waxer, just watch to see what she is doing.  She should put some wax into a disposable cup or something, and then only take wax from that cup, OR she may use a brand new wooden applicator for each dip.

    Good luck!

if you friend them on Facebook they have announce the weeks specials every Monday. They typically offer deals on massage, waxing and facials. They also sent them out via email if you sign up. I got my last facial for $55 when my previously lady was charging $100 :)

Brazilian is all the hair - a lot of the salons call it a "custom" wax though.  A regular bikini wax is when they just scale down the hair around the bikini line so that if you were in a bikini, there wouldn't be any hair outside of the line.

I would definitely also pay attention to the "quality" of the waxing job, so to speak. Like, for me, I had one time where I couldn't get in to see Lynn and had another woman there do it. I hated it! It was fine while it happened, but I noticed afterward that she missed a ton of spots and it was a really "messy" job. It might be hard to notice the first time if it is a "good" job or not, but after a few times it is obvious. Good luck ladies! :) I also echo drdfabio in that it is so much better than shaving! It's kind of like my treat for myself since I don't dye my hair(anymore) or do mani/pedis.

Wow - this is quite the thread :)
I don't wax, so can't offer much help.  I did laser hair removal a few years ago and it is AWESOME! I think it took about 6-8 sessions and only have an occasional hair to shave (I need a "touch-up") Just thought I'd throw that out there!

Yes, it adds up, but worth it.
I was working at a clinic while in school and was able to get an employee discount at the time...no longer there, so I haven't had the extra cash for a touch-up, hopefully soon though!
