Wedding Website

How important is a wedding website? I had never even heard of one until I got engaged. Is that a pretty normal thing to do?

Our wedding will probably be between 100-150 people next May, and the majority of the people live within the Metroplex, with a few family exceptions. It will be somewhat lowkey, we're doing Los Vaqueros for the ceremony and reception, so I'm just not sure that I need a website for something that's not going to be huge. Thoughts?

Re: Wedding Website

  • It's a nice thing to have but it's not totally necessary.  I used it to list all the times and places (RD, ceremony, brunch), hotel blocks for OOT, registry info., our HM plans, things about the hotel such as the smoking policy, etc. I couldn't tell you how many people even looked at it but I'm sure some did.

I think they can be really helpful for out-of-town guests that have never been to the area. 85% of our guest list was from OOT and most of my family members had already mentioned how nervous they were about driving in TX (lots of big highways and congested traffic, especially compared to where they live). So I had pages on the website that listed out transportation options (Super Shuttle & approx cost, cabs & approx cost, free hotel shuttle at one of the hotels, directions, buses/trains, etc). Also the difference between the 2 airports in DFW (many people mentioned to me being confused between DFW and DAL).

And a page listing out the 3 hotels I recommended with a more extensive list of the amenities of each. One had a free shuttle, pool, free breakfast, etc ... one had a $20 per day parking fee, which is something my relatives had probably never even thought of, and was too much detail to put on the Accomodations card. I wanted them to have all the info.

I also had a ton of info on Things To Do around here for the OOT guests making a long weekend of it, and a few pictures of us that some of my relatives probably hadn't seen before. I don't know how many people used it, but it made me feel good that I'd put it out there if they did need it.

So, if you don't have OOT guests, it might not be necessary (or you can just do a page with the wedding details on it, in case they lose the invitation but have your website bookmarked, and maybe where you are registered since that won't be on the invite).
  • The majority of our guests are not OOT, but we have a wedding website as well.  I'm one of those curious people, so I like to get more information on stuff like this before I attend.  I like to read the couple's story, find out more hotel information, and get their registry information.  Instead of including a card with registry information, another card with hotel information (etc) in with our invites, I just put one small card about our wedding website in there that basically just stated they could go there to get more information about hotel accommodations, the registry, and more.

You certainly don't HAVE to have one, but I do find them helpful and fun to look at.  It saves you postage on your invites because you don't have to then include all of that detailed info in with your invites (usually on separate cards).  And, many of the websites are free.  Win-win.

  • I just wanted to say that I agree with everything that has already been said. We had a lot of fun putting ours together, and we have about 50% OOT guests. Plus it's an easier way to put your registries out there without being too forward about it.
  • Ditto Angelsong and cwaggoner.   I really had a lot of fun making ours.  It's definitely a "thing" for lots of my friends to do, so I was looking forward to it when we got engaged.

Now, the "planning bio."  That was news to me, but I can totally see where it would be a helpful thing to have if you're going to be on a wedding-planning forum.

  • I'm in the processs of putting our website together. We have about 90% OOT so This will make it easier on our guests to get all the info they need as far as hotels, things to do, and registry.

What companies did y'all go thourgh to set up your websites? I've never made a website before, if I make one, I just want it to be free and easy.
  • The Knot's is free.  You get a really long URL, though, and I disliked the formatting.  I used mywedding.com to make mine.  There's tons of them out there, though.

<div>I'm wondering if TK changed their wedding website.  I started one on TK last April I think, but then when I came back on to update it this March, it prompted me to pick our URL because the site address had change to xxxxx.ourwedding.com.  So now ours is really short and sweet, easy to put on our insert to our invites.  But you're right -- I remember that when I signed up, the URL was about 3 lines long!!!</div>

  • I used mywedding.com for mine, its free and it was easy to set up. You pick how you want the site to look from their themes and then you type in what you want each section to say and they format it for you, and you can use as many or as few pages as you want. I don't think people expect you to have a webpage (so far most people that have seen it were surprised that we had a site). I also have a lot of OOT guests so I think its going to be very helpful for people who have never been to Texas before to get some extra information about what hotels they might want to stay in and how close to the wedding they are, what things they might want to do while in town, that sort of thing. And yes like cwaggoner said its a great way to have your registry information available without being crass about it Laughing
