Ben Affleck's Oscar Speech

This is a really good article, about a really good speech that Ben Affleck gave.

Re: Ben Affleck's Oscar Speech

  • I'm waiting for the video to load but from what I've read so far, I don't have any problem at all with what he said. Marriage IS work. And my guess is that they've had conversations about that work, and about spending x number of Chrismtases together, so the statement probably meant more to HER than to anyone else, which I'm pretty sure is exactly what it was intended to do.

I don't know why people have to pretend like once you get married things magically are perfect all the time. No good thing happens without work, and a good marriage is the same way. Work shouldn't be a four-letter word in this situation.

  • That is a great article....thanks for sharing it.  I agree that relationships are an envolving kind of work.  I also think it is easy to not see when you've stopped working on things too.  As wierd as it sounds, having a scheduled "check in" date once every few months helps...you remember that you've stopped giving someone massages, they've started reading in the other room rather than with you, etc. which can grow into more massive problems slowly.

FI and I work on our relationship and check in a lot to make sure the other person is happy.
  • I love them together and I think his speech was great. I think it's refreshing to hear them not be all "our marriage is easy and perfect all of the time." Relationships take work. It doesn't magically become easy, peasy because you're married (I assume haha).

  • I love it.

  • I watched the Oscars when it was originally broadcast and I have to say...Jennifer Garner's face said it all. You could absolutely tell that she was touched by the sentiment and that it was a moment between the two of them.

I love this article. You don't have to be married to know that relationships are work after a number of years. I can't even begin to imagine the additional pressure their marriage faces as two famous actors. I applaud them for being honest and open about "the work". Especially on such a public stage. They didn't have to share that...but the fact that they did speaks volumes about who they are.
  • I loved it too. It was very honest, and you could tell it was the perfect thing to say just by looking at her face.

I've always said I don't believe in soul mates or anything like that.  BF & I have chosen to be each other's partners for life.  There may be other people better suited for us somewhere but this is what we chose and what makes us the most happy.  We choose to be together and choose to make this relationship work through all of the good and bad.  Any long term relationship will always be work and won't automatically be all sunshine and roses.

I agree. We are choosing to be monogamous, to grow together, to love each other through good times and bad times.

Yep.  This is what I was going to say.

I agree with what Ben said and with most of what was written in the article, but that's not really the point.  That statement was meant for Jennifer and it clearly meant a lot to her.  What else needs to be said about it?

All the haters need to pipe the eff down.
  • I didn't have time to watch the video but from reading the posts here and the article I think everyone was spot on.  I loved this article and I love that he said that to his wife in front of the Oscars.
