When did you send your DW Invitations

We are DIY invitations and I was trying to calculate how much time they will take us and when we should mail them? We were going to use Kimmy's idea of mailing them from the Bridal Veil, OR post office. We will be in Portland the weekend after 4th of July and FI says we should just mail them that Friday or Sat. but I think it is too early? Wedding is Oct. 11th.

Re: When did you send your DW Invitations

  • We did our about 8 weeks out, or maybe 10.  Some had to go to Europe and Chile, and the one's to Chile took over 3 weeks to get there.  We sent out STD's over a year in advance to give people time to plan

  • I sent mine at 9 weeks.  Also we sent STDs at about 7 months before and verbally informed our VIPs about date/location a few months before that.

  • We did Save the Dates at 6 months and invitations at 8 weeks.  I personally think 3 months + 1 week is a bit early since your STD is the 'courtesy heads up', but it really depends on your crowd.  I know some gals have sent invitations 4-6 months in advance for various reasons.  Our guests didn't require much planning / notice / budgeting since Hawaii is basically doable as a weekend trip from the West Coast.  However, if you think yours might, a few weeks earlier won't hurt anything.  I would still keep my RSVP date no earlier than Sept 11 to give people ample time to work out their schedules and to minimize last minute changes / surprises.

  • I'm planning on sending out our save-the-dates in exactly a month (8 months out) and we plan to send our invitations in September (~2.5-3 months out) since our potential caterer needs a final head count 45 days out. Our respond by date will be October 21 or so since our head count is due on oct 28. I think it just depends on your vendors and your guests. We really don't have a feel for who will come or not, yet, so it's hard to say...

  • Thanks everyone. This helps a lot. We basically know who is coming but my BF and my youngest brother always wait until the last minute to book anything, unless you give them a specific deadline.  FI loves the idea of mailing them from BV but he didn't want to drive down there a few weeks or month after we had just been in that area. I'm thinking I will mail them after the 4th and then put an rsvp date of mid August. That way I can light a fire under those who drag their feet.
We did send STD's for our original date and I am just finishing up the Change the Dates to go out this weekend.
lwilson, I hear you on the time constraints. My summer is already pretty packed for work and I have to stage an annual meeting the second week of Sept. so I kind of need this worked out in the next month or so. Plus the DIY stuff is a great stress reliever for me.
  • We sent ours out really early. At 8 months. We had to because ppl were already starting to book their trips and needed the information to do it. All of our guests, except for 4, RSVPed within the first week they got the invitations.
  • I sent my invitations out the last week of February for my May 21 wedding. I asked for RSVPs by March 30.
  • We sent ours out early as well, at 6 months.  We have family coming from Australia so we wanted to give them lots of time to plan & save money (and we didn't want to have the added expense of STD's....seems to have worked out well so far.  We need a final headcount ASAP because we might need to book some extra space if we go over a certain number so we are trying to chase up some people for their responses at the moment...

  • We sent out our save the dates about 7 months in advance and then we are planning to send out our invitations this week, our wedding is July 12th, with an RSVP date of May 12th.  It was just frustrating for me trying to budget everything without having any idea of how many people are actually going to come..

  • bkingston, I hear you on that one. We just budgeted that everyone will be there and if someone isn't able to make it at least we will have the cushion.
Kimmy, we are getting the same thing. It seems as soon as I annouced that we bought our air everyone is now asking questions and trying to work out their trips.

  • We sent ours out 6 months in advance because we didn't send save the dates, and most guests will be coming from Australia.  Our wedding is 8th August, and we asked for RSVP by mid June.
