Dress Alterations

Has anyone had to get a dress taken out?  I have a bridesmaid dress for a friend's wedding 6 weeks before mine.  Currently, I can not get it zipped all the way up.

I am trying to lose weight for my wedding and hope that by the time I have to get the dress altered (begining of april) this won't be an issue.  I am nervous that if I don't lose the weight that the dress still won't fit.  I am trying to figure out if I should buy a larger size of the dress.  I am hoping that I may just be able to get it taken out a little.  How much can they take dresses out?  It is from David's Bridal if that helps.

Re: Dress Alterations

  • I'm not sure exactly how much the dress can be taken out, but my advice would be to get the bigger size. It is a lot easier to have it taken in than out.

  • If it still doesn't fit then, ask the seamstress if she can replace the zipper with a corset back.  I understand dresses normally can't be let out much, if at all, because there's not likely to be any extra fabric to work with, but a corset back would be more forgiving.  And, if you keep losing weight after the fitting, a corset back dress will still fit perfectly.

Also, check the reviews for that alterist.  I've heard bad things about David's Bridal alterations (the one at the store I went to was a blithering idiot.)  David's Bridal in general has a spotty reputation for service, so check on yours.  If the seamstress reviews aren't up to par, look for someone else locally who can do the alterations.

  • Thanks for the advice!  I wasn't planning on going to DB for my alterations.  I am going to a private seamstress for my wedding dress who I will also use for the bridesmaid dress.

I agree - don't do davids for alterations. I was told at the bridal shop that will do my alterations that most dresses can be taken in 2 dress sizes and let out 1 dress size without changing the structure and look of the dress.  Obviously it differs for each designer.  Maybe you could call DB and just ask how many sizes either way their dresses go.  Good Luck.
  • Do you need to have the dress hemmed at all?  I needed to have a bridesmaid's dress let out in the hip region, but taken in at the bust & shortened.  My seamstress used the extra fabric from the bust/hem to add additional material at the hips.  Since it was at the sides, and the extra seam was in the back, no one noticed at all.
  • I needed to get my dress altered for my sister's wedding in October. I had the same issue, and only one week to get into the dress. I took it to the cleaners and had it hemmed and they used the fabric from the hem to add a little triangular extension around the zipper in the back. It wasn't noticeable at all and my dress fit perfectly! as the previous posters suggested, you can ask a seamstress to do this. Everything cost $100 total for me.

  • Thank you all!  I will have to get a hem, so I think i should definitely be fine.  I think I should fit in it by the time I need to, but wanted to know what worst case scenario would be.

  • My DB told me two inches max but then they can put in a corset back for more space (I'm going with a corset; if I lose the weight, great, but if not, it'll still fit!)
