When are you leaving on your HM?

FI and I are getting married on a Saturday and plan to leave mid-late afternoon on Sunday for our HM.  We're driving through the night (we're both night people).  Any input on this?  Are we being unrealistic?

With being long distance, in various stages of schooling, and starting jobs the past 4 years we've been together, we've never been on vacation together (in 5 years, I've taken 1 vacation and he's only taken one in the past 5 years as well) so it's hard to know what to expect.  Any newlyweds out there that have input on this?  Did it take you a day or 2 to recover from the wedding?  Feel free to leave any other pieces of advice as well!

TIA Smile

Re: When are you leaving on your HM?

  • Our wedding is at 4:00 pm on a saturday, followed by our cocktail hour and reception. The reception should be over around 10, and we are leaving that night to go to Baltimore, where we fly out of the next morning at 7am!!!

I think leaving mid to late afternoon on Sunday would be okay. That gives you time to sleep in a little, have a relaxed breakfast/brunch, and get on the road.  Just do as much packing beforehand to prevent the last-minute packing frenzy.

We don't have to drive too far (from DC to Baltimore on Sunday morning to leave for the HM, with the reception ending at 11pm on Saturday). I'm packing a bag for Friday & Saturday, and separate luggage for the HM.

    Have a great time!
  • It's do-able.  You're going to be tired so I'd be open to the idea of stopping halfway through your night trip if you have to.  Where are you driving from and to?  How long a drive is it?

We were married on our honeymoon so I can't say too much about that :-)  I will say that I was dead tired by the time my husband and I were finally alone on our wedding night.  I wanted to just crawl into bed and not move.  A good night's sleep, though, and we were good to go the next day.
  • Are you just driving or do you have to then catch a flight?  I know at the end of our wedding night I was completely exhausted, but I'm not a night person either.  I would suggest leaving the next day if you can.
  • Our wedding was on a Sat. and we left Monday. We were flying to Hawaii and it was an almost 9 hour flight, so we wanted a day in between the hectic wedding and the long flight to just relax. Our parents also wanted to be there when we opened our gifts the next day. I personally really enjoyed having a day in between to make sure everything was packed, get some extra sleep, etc., but if you aren't leaving until later in the day you could still sleep in and relax in the morning.

    Vacation
  • Our wedding is a Friday night (reception ends 10pm) and our flight leaves at 330pm on Saturday
  • We had a mid afternoon flight the day after our wedding which was perfect. We were able to sleep in and have breakfast with my parents the next morning before going to the airport. We loved the feeling of being whisked away after the wedding, and are glad we got to sleep in after being so tired from the day before.
  • We are getting married on a Saturday and flying out Monday morning.  We wanted a day in between to open presents and relax a bit before the flights.

  • We are getting married on a Saturday and are leaving on a early (6am) Tuesday morning so it gives us plenty of time to get everything together and relax a bit after the wedding.

We are getting married on a Saturday afternoon and leaving on a flight Sunday night at 8:30. Plenty of time to rest and recover before we leave for our cruise. It will also be nice to say goodbye to our out of town family/guests that morning. The drive you have will be nice to relax as well and talk about the amazing wedding you all had! :)

  • We're getting married on a Saturday, leaving early Monday morning. We wanted a day to relax, run any last-minute errands, and have brunch at our favorite restaurant. And yeah, OK, open presents. ;-)

  • We are getting married Saturday at Noon, but than have a lunch reception and than a formal reception that will go until 1ish am - so we decided to leave Monday morning for our HM, after a long day, full of a emotion and late night, we figured a day to sleep in and pack was welcoming...

  • Thanks for the input ladies!  Luckily, since we're driving times are adjustable :)  Appreciate the feedback!
